Art: Interview with a Korean Traditional music student
I was lucky enough to have a friend that is currently attending the Gugak(국악: Korean traditional music) national school. She is a 거문고(geomungo) player, and I interviewed her about 국악. Here is the interview and the translations! It will be helpful if you practice reading Korean. There is a key vocabulary list at the end of the interview.
Q: 간단히 자기소개를 해 주세요.
☛ Please introduce yourself simply.
A: 저는 거문고를 전공 중인 국악 전공생입니다. 현재 국립 국악 중학교를 다니고 있습니다.
☛ I am a Gugak major student specializing in Geomungo.
Q: 어떻게 국악을 전공으로 선택하게 되었나요?
☛ How did you choose Gugak as your major?
A: 저는 국악 곡 ‘대취타’(Daechwita. Military band music. It’s a Traditional Korean song.) 를 공연에서 직접 관람한 적이 있었는데, 그 때 거문고를 처음으로 보게 되었습니다. 연주자가 멋있게 거문고를 연주하는 것을 보고 그 악기에 대해 조사하게 되었는데, 지금은 그 악기를 전공하게 되었어요.
☛ I have seen the traditional Korean music ‘Daechwita’ on stage, and that’s when I first saw the geomungo. I saw the performer play the geomungo wonderfully, and now I’m majoring in that instrument.
Q: 잠깐 거문고에 대하여 설명해 주실 수 있나요?
☛Could you explain about the geomungo briefly?
A: 거문고는 6줄로 편성되어 있는 현악기로 산조*(Sanjo is music played by commoners) 와 정악*(Jeongak is court/classical music)을 연주할 수 있어요. 거문고의 소리는 낮고, 심금을 울려요. 그러한 점에서 서양 오케스트라에서 베이스를 맡는 첼로나 콘트라베이스 정도랑 비슷한 것 같아요.
☛Geomungo is a string instrument with six strings, and can be used to play Sanjo and Jeongak. Geomungo’s sound is low and touches one’s heart. In that sense, I think it’s similar to the cello and contrabass in an orchestra.
거문고는 고구려 때부터 내려져오던 우리나라의 고유한 악기이기도 하고, 특유의 낮고 웅장한 악기 소리는 누구든지 매력적으로 느낄 거에요.
☛Geomungo is our country’s traditional instrument from the Koguryo times, and its special low and grand sound will surely appeal to everyone.
사람들이 가야금과 거문고를 많이 햇갈려 하는데, 엄연히 다른 악기에요. 가야금은 12줄과 25줄 두 종류가 있고, 손으로 연주해요. 가야금은 거문고보다 높고 청아한 소리가 나고, 서양 악기로 치자면 피아노 또는 바이올린의 역할을 맡고 있어요. 반면 거문고는 총 6줄의 현을 술대*(Bamboo plectrum/pick used to play the geomungo)로 연주하고, 낮고 웅장한 소리를 자랑해요.
☛A lot of people confuse gayageum and geomungo, but they’re undoubtedly different instruments. Gayageum has two different types: 12 strings and 25 strings, and it’s played by hand. Gayageum has a higher and clearer ringing sound than geomungo, and if compared to a western instrument it’s part is similar to a piano’s and violin’s. On the other hand, geomungo has six strings and is played by a bamboo plectrum(pick).
Q:그렇군요. 그렇다면 현재 다니시는 학교인 국립국악중학교/고등학교에 대하여 설명해주세요.
☛I see. Then, please tell us about your school, the national Gugak middle school /high school.
A: 국악고등학교는 서울 강남구에 있어요. 1955년 4월 1일에 개교했답니다. 국악고등학교는 국악 인재들을 전문적으로 가르쳐 능력을 더 키우는 학교에요.
☛Gugak school is in Seoul Gangnam-gu. It opened in 1955 April 1st. Gugak school teaches talented gugak students professionally to help them develop their skills.
우리 학교의 교훈은 신념, 정진, 봉사입니다. 제 개인적인 생각으로는 신념을 가지고 국악을 연주하고 정진하며 배우되 오직 이기적인 마음이 아닌 봉사를 하는 마음으로 세상에 국악을 널리 알리라는 뜻을 품은 것 같아요.
☛Our school motto is belief(conviction/principle), devotion, and service. I personally think it means to perform gugak with firm belief and learn with devotion but not with a selfish heart but a voluntary, serving heart and spread our gugak all over the world.
국가에서 지원하는 학교이기 때문에 더 당당히, 그리고 더 열정적으로 국악을 배우고 알릴 수 있는 기회가 있다고 생각해요.
☛Since the nation supports this school, I think we have a chance to learn gugak with passion and confidence.
국악고등학교 출신 연애인도 꽤나 볼 수 있는데 한 사람만 얘기하자면 미스코리아 출신 이하늬가 있어요.
☛There are also quite a few entertainers from gugak school, for example, former Miss Korea Lee-Ha-Nui.
Q: 국악을 전공하면서 힘든 점은 없나요?
☛Are there any hardships while majoring in Gugak?
A:국악을 하면서 힘든 점은 노력을 하는 만큼 오는 고통인 것 같아요. 노력을 하는 만큼 연주하는 손이 아프기도 하고, 항상 양반 다리 자세로 연주하니까 골반도 아파요. 심지어 처음 배울 때는 10분동안 연주하기도 힘들 정도로 아팠어요.
☛I think the hard part of gugak is the fact that the more you practice the more pain you face. If you practice your hands hurt, and since you play cross-legged your pelvis hurts as well. When I first started out It was hard to play for 10 minutes because it hurt so much.
하지만 그만두지 않고 계속 연주하고, 연습하고, 노력하다 보니까 어느 순간 적응이 되서 몇 시간을 연주하고 있는 내 자신을 발견했어요. 중요한 것은 끊임 없는 노력인 것 같아요. 노력하면 할수록 뿌듯해지고 고통도 사라지는 법이니까요. 이런 점은 국악에만 적용되는 것은 아닌 것 같에요. 이 글을 보게 될 여러분도 지금 무언가를 위해 끊임없이, 힘들어도 노력하고 있을테니까요.
☛However, as I kept on playing, practicing, and trying without giving up I soon found myself playing for hours without feeling tired. I think trying again and again is important. As you try, you feel better and the pain disappears as well. I think these points don’t apply to gugak only. After all, you people who will read this are currently trying again and again for something, even if it’s hard.
Q: 앞으로의 목표는 있나요? 혹시 이 글을 읽게 될 사람들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있나요?
☛Do you have a future goal? Is there anything you want to say to the people who will read this post?
A: 앞으로의 목표라 하면, 연주자가 되고 싶은 마음도 있고, 곡을 써서 지휘를 하고 싶은 마음도 있어요. 저는 국악을 연주하고 가르치며 세상에 알리고 싶어요.
☛Well, I want to be a performer, and I want to write a song and conduct as well. I guess I want to perform gugak and teach gugak, and spread our music all over the world.
또한, 국악에 대한 기대치는 개인적으로 굉장히 높아요. 우리 나라의 정서에 딱 맞는 우리 국악은 대중적으로도 충분히 인기를 끌 수 있다고 보아요. 또한, 퓨전 국악도 최근에 명성을 날리고 있어요.
☛Also, my expectations on gugak are personally very high. I think gugak, which fits our country’s emotions so well can become popular among the public. Also, fusion gugak is rising to fame these days.
이 글을 보게 될 사람들에게 하고 싶은 말이라면, 대한민국의 K-pop 뿐만 아니라 전통 국악에도 관심을 조금 가져주었으면 해요. 듣다보면 국악만의 매력을 찾을 수 있을거에요.
☛I want to say to the people reading this, I wish many people would show interest in not only k-pop but also in Korea’s traditional music.. If you listen to gugak, you will be able to find its appeal.
또 늘 목표를 향해 끊임없이 노력하면 좋겠어요. 아무리 힘들고 지치더라도 달리기를 멈추지 말아줬으면 해요. 달리기를 하다보면 처음에는 넘어져도, 자꾸 일어나면 어느 순간 결승선을 통과하는 자기 자신을 바라볼 수 있을 거에요!
☛Also, I wish you would keep on trying and race towards your goal and dreams! Even if you get tired and hopeless on the way I wish you wouldn’t stop running towards your goal. When you start a race, you might fall at the start. But if you keep on getting up and not give up, one day you’ll find yourself crossing the finish line.
특히 한국어를 공부하는 여러분들이 대단한 것 같아요. 한국어 공부를 포기하지 않고 열심히 노력하면 좋겠네요 ㅎㅎ 파이팅!
☛I think you people studying Korean are brilliant! I wish you don’t give up on your Korean studies and keep on trying hard! Fighting!

☛I want to end this interview saying that culture is very valuable. I think culture shines brighter when people show more interest in it. That’s why I want to spread gugak all over the world.
