There was anger, sometimes, at the business. I don’t think he ever came to terms. He was angry at the dynamics of the business, the expectation and pressure to sell a lot of records. No one was pressuring him to sell a lot of records but that was what the machinery was about. The star. There was a part of him that enjoyed that, but there was another part of Jeff that was disgusted with it because it was commerce, that he was part of it.

(Jeff) went in to an Arista Records meeting and he showed up late. I waited for him in the reception area and he comes wandering in with a ripped t-shirt, his old flea market pants, and a see-through plastic bag containing Ajax and bathroom cleaner and he just carried that to the meeting with him. This meeting was with the president of the company.
