Handel’s marvellous Dixit Dominus.
Paul McCreesh conducts Handel’s Athaliah. This follows the Biblical narrative of the wicked Israelite Queen and her comeuppance, to put it lightly. I absolutely love the majesty and splendour of Handel’s oratorios. In fact, I find the word “oratorio” to be almost synonymous with Handel. I have never been an opera fan, but something about these towering sacred works grabs me every time. You can see that the above performance uses a mixture of modern Western clothing and some robes-- not my thing, but don’t let that distract you from the excellent cast of singers.
Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba. Played excellently by this young organist, Gert van Hoef. As mentioned many times beforehand, it is always positive to see organ music being enjoyed by the young. Some people in the comments’ section have noted the irony of him playing Handel by memory while having a Bach score closed in front of him. Either way, I enjoyed this piece.
