Hinoka had been mad when she found her. Lady and not. She demanded an explanation for how Setsuna had gotten so injured. Setsuna knew that if she said she’d fought someone, her liege would go running off to find them. She protected too much.
So Setsuna had lied. A really nasty trap, she said. Hinoka hadn’t looked like she bought it, but she hadn’t pushed. Azama had laughed and had decided that maybe not healing her fully would have her learn. That felt like punishment enough.
With the adrenaline of the fight gone, everything had hurt a lot more. Her leg ached, her wrist had been swollen. She’d had an annoying spree of headaches ever since she’d taken that hilt to the head. But she’d been impatient all the same. Ismaire was still out there. Setsuna had places she needed to be. But Hinoka had insisted she’d stay still and heal and while Setsuna loved her liege, she’d never felt so frustrated with her.
So one night after she’d gone to sleep, Setsuna slipped out. Her liege would forgive her, and she’d be back soon enough.
Her good hand banged on the door. “Gerik!” She wasn’t even sure he was home. If she had gotten here while she was trapped at home. She banged on the door again. Gods, if he was out on a job, she was going to kill him.
