ooc; △ Why do you act so bashful when it comes to crushes?

Yen’fay swallowed thickly. “I... I’m not..............” 

ooc; Yen’fay can’t really answer this question -- partially because it’s embarrassing, and partially because he doesn’t actually know the reason why. Luckily, I do!

Yen’fay has a weird case of social anxiety that he doesn’t really know is there. He tends to be okay when talking with someone he’s close with, or about things that interest him, or even when giving speeches to crowds of people. But intimate conversations with people tend to make him... really nervous -- especially if they’re people he tends really look up to or respect or admire for any reason. Crushes, of course, would fit the bill. He has a bit of an underlying fear of saying or doing something that would make him look ridiculous or cause someone to respect him. 

It’s super unpleasant, and most of the time, he’d rather avoid it more than anything, but he’s also no coward and will sometimes push himself to face his insecurities rather than run from them. If all goes well, maybe he’ll start to see the person as more down-to-earth rather than the untouchable masterpiece he perceives them to be from a distance. Maybe they could even come to be friends. Wouldn’t that be nice?

7/10 stop bringing up crushes damn it he’s a man not a lovesick school child.

“I have a family,” Yen’fay replied easily. “They are what matters most to me. However, if you are referring to me starting my own, I must admit I haven’t given it much thought. I believe myself to be... unworthy of such a life.”

Trick or Treat! What would your muse dress up as for Halloween? What other ways might they celebrate the holiday?

It would be nigh impossible to get Yen’fay to dress up for the day. He’d have to be basically emotionally blackmailed by one of his  thousands of younger siblings before he cracked. That’s literally the only way it’s going to happen.

In such a case, he’d probably go with something boring. Like a tree. Both because it’s fitting with him being as tol as he is, and because since he IS freakishly tall, he wouldn’t want to dress up as something scary and legitimately terrify any young babs. He’d much rather be home passing out candy, but he would definitely want to accompany any youngsters who don’t have a guide (SIDE EYES @princessmacedon, W H E R E A R E H E R P A R E N T S)

Modern AU Yeff would probably not be as opposed to dressing up, assuming it’s for a party or something. He’d probably do something kind of boring but timeless, like a Vampire, or maybe something fun, like a ninja or a samurai. Either way, he’s going to look hot af, even if sexiness wasn’t even close to what he was was going for. (Obvious exception being the tree, because not even sexist costume designers can rescue that one)

Phantoms at the Opera (Yen’fay + Emmeryn)

He couldn’t help himself – he smiled back at her, fondly grasping one of her hands in his. “I’m quite sure we will, Milady. I can’t wait.”

But it seemed as though waiting would have to be something he got comfortable with, and fast. The auditorium filled slowly, and people still milled about, chatting and looking through their playbills. Perhaps he’d misjudged when the play was actually supposed to start? Or, maybe it was just a slow night. He wasn’t entirely certain.

As they sat and waited, an uncomfortable silence fell over them. Yen’fay had temporarily worked through the slight anxiety of being in her presence while he was talking about the drama about to unfold in front of them both, but now… he felt as if he was back at square one. 

He glanced slightly at Emmeryn. He wondered if she still remembered the… greeting she’d given him last time they met. It had been weighing heavily on his mind since then, and he was dying to ask her… something about it.

“…” He cleared his throat slightly. “Erm… Lady Emmeryn, if I may?” he asked, ignoring the blush steadily rising in his cheeks again, and locking eyes with her. “Perhaps it is inappropriate for me to speak so plainly, but I… have given much… thought to the time you kissed me.”

His warm, brown irises held her gaze, unwavering. “I was thinking… How magnificent it would be if I were allowed to return the favor in kind, Milady.”

If she were a more easily flustered woman, here would be the part where she would raise her fingers to her lips, and feel her heart beat faster. “Oh?” She vocalized, wondering if he were about to ask her not to repeat that. Or perhaps he had some stronger words to say. 

But no, it was both better and worse. 

“Return the favor in kind?” She asked, smile visible. A smile that faltered slightly, in the face of Yen’fay’s sincere gaze. A gaze she could not hold, and she ducked her head, blushing to beat the band. 

How magnificent…

Heart beating faster, Emmeryn stilled her racing thoughts (thinking of the side effects of kissing another “retired” monarch had no benefit, after all), and looked back at him. “I would welcome the attempt, my lord.” She said, with all the boldness she could muster.

He smiled a little at that, feeling a surge of blood rush through cheeks, all the way up to his ears. Still, he feigned dignity and restraint, though his heart was bursting with jubilation. “Very well. I will endeavor to fulfill your expectations, milady.” A pause, and he added, “If you feel as though my actions are too bold, do not hesitate to stop me.” After all, the kiss she’d surprised him with all those weeks ago was a chaste peck on the cheek and nothing more. He had... something much different in mind. 

Tenderly, as if he were gently lifting a fallen nestling back to its home, he cupped her face in his warm palm. After studying her a moment -- taking the time to appreciate her beauty as well as look for any signs of distress, he reflexively wet his lips with his tongue, and drew close.

With a slight inclination of his head, he closed his eyes, and their lips met. Hallelujah.

Yen’fay nodded, taking careful note of the younger’s words. Frankly, the notion of falling in love with someone always by his side seemed a bit alien to him, considering his own upbringing. While arranged marriages were unusual where he was from, he’d still been raised with the expectation that he would marry a noblewoman – probably one from elsewhere in Valm to join their two nations and thus expand Chon’sin’s influence. 

However, he could definitely see the appeal. Surely, having known each other for so long must have significant benefits. The retainer must know all sorts of secrets having to do with Ryoma’s personality and moods that would take others years to figure out – including Yen’fay, himself. He wondered if the retainer would have made such a foolish error as not understanding the full gravity of Ryoma’s confession as Yen’fay had, just moments ago. He was still upset at his insensitivity. Perhaps someone who knew Ryoma better would have known how difficult that must have been for him…

Augh, but now wasn’t the time for beating himself up about something that happened so long ago. He tried to focus his mind again on Ryoma’s words, but found himself distracted for a different reason. The young king’s hair was… It was free. Unlike Yen’fay’s hair, which had been tied up to limit its contact with the water below, Ryoma’s was still cascading down his shoulders and back. If it came in contact with the scalding water they were pleasantly soaking in for any long amount of time, it would probably lead to split ends. Unacceptable. No brother of his would be subjected to such horrors, especially not the young king.

“Ryoma,” he interrupted softly, drawing closer. He hoped he wouldn’t come off as smothering to the young king, but hair was serious business. “Would you like me to tie your hair up similar to mine? So that it’s not in contact with the water? You may continue with your tale – I only worry that it might turn brittle if prudence is not exercised.”

And on a personal note, he thought it would be kind of cute if their hair matched, if only for this short amount of time…

Still keeping his eyes averted, Ryoma couldn’t gauge what Yen’fay thought. Even if he had been accepting all along, it was hard to fight down the nerves. If nothing else the words felt clumsy tumbling out of Ryoma’s mouth as opposed to carefully composed on a page (as they had been, late at night when he knew Saizo was on a faraway mission).

Whatever he had expected, Yen’fay’s words were not it. “I… pardon?” His hair? Was Yen’fay even listening? “Ah, of course.” Flustered as he was, he hadn’t realized he’d left it loose. Goodness knew what could have happened if Yen’fay hadn’t had a keener eye. He shifted so that his back was toward Yen’fay, a convenient excuse not to look at him. 

“As I was saying… At first he only visited the palace. I always looked forward to the day when he would finally move in. I was a child; I suppose I thought we would get up to merriment. That we would truly be friends. Of course, the reality was… quite different.”

Not even bothering to hide his overwhelming relief that Ryoma had agreed to have his hair tied up, Yen’fay dutifully went to work at securing it into a bun. Good thing he had said something, too. His brother really did have the thickest, most luxurious head of hair he’d ever seen. He’d hate for it to be ruined.

As he busied himself with his task, he was sure to keep attentively listening to the young king’s story. His words still seemed to carry with them the sunny optimism of a child. How sad that his wish had apparently never come to fruition. Still, Yen’fay had questions.

“Is that so?” he asked, strong hands still combing through Ryoma’s mane. “Would you not consider the two of you friends, then? I’ve seen how some of your younger siblings act around their retainers -- they seem quite close. I would have thought your situation might be similar.”

In the end, Ryoma seemed to have a bit too much hair to easily work into just one bun, so Yen’fay instead worked on parting his hair in two separate buns -- one higher, and one lower. It seemed they wouldn’t have matching hair styles after all. What a shame.

Modern AU Yen’fay

Same as on my Gaius blog. I’ll refrain from talking about headcanons that involves other characters until I’ve cleared it with the muns, as per the usual.

Is in his mid 30s, unlike the FERP canon Yen’fay, who is in his late 30s to mid 40s, depending on when you meet him (due to time fuckery).

Still tol af at 6′9″ (2.0574 m)

Was going to be a professional orchestra player before he had to come to terms with how thoroughly fucked the industry is.

Still plays for charity concerts and the like.

Is a musical theory professor.

Also tutors sometimes on the weekends and teaches a self defense class and fences for the fun of it.

Every waking moment of his life is jam packed with scheduled events

Doesn’t seem to notice that maybe his desire to be doing something “productive” at all times might be symptomatic of an anxiety disorder. 

Values structure above all else. Plays strictly by the rules and expects everyone around him to, as well.

Total tea snob, but can’t even be assed to be polite about it in this universe.

Coffee is fucking gross miss him w that shit.

Wears glasses, enjoys wearing suits, and collecting antique swords.

Also likes riding motorcycles, though he generally prefers to drive his hybrid car because it’s better for the environment.

Did I mention he’s a fucking hippie.

Single. Not dating. Don’t ask him why. 

Probably came into some good money when he was born -- hasn’t struggled a day in his life other than his daily struggle to prove to himself that he’s worth the oxygen he breathes.

Passionate about music and art, but struggles to connect with other people otherwise.

5. An excited text.

[ SENT - 7:32PM ] : heyyyy mr grumpy buns!

[ SENT - 7:33PM ] : there was this really great 2 for 1 deal for this a m a z i n g resort that i love love love. sooooo lucky you  gets to come along for the ride!!!!

In all honesty, there were many people he could have asked to accompany him. His social circle is vast and all encompassing and if he really had to, he’d still be excited to go on his own – it’s his very favorite place to vacation after all. However, what he said he found true. Yen’fay seemed like he could use time to simply relax and thoroughly enjoy himself. So, the invitation was extended in the hopes that he’d be able to do something nice for someone else.

“Inside the play itself?” Emmeryn repeated, leaning forward in her chair in order to peer down to the stage. The curtain was still drawn, but if she didn’t wish very dearly to know how they’d pull it off, she would eat her opera glasses. And his excitement was so infectious, she couldn’t help but also get excited.

“Why, Lord Yen’fay, I would be more than delighted to accompany you afterwards, I suspect we shall have many things to talk about, whether the play stands tall in the face of our expectations or falls quite flat!”

To be able to speak of the play afterwards did sound delightful in fact! So delightful that she smiled quite warmly at him, unwilling to hide how the anticipation of an excellent evening was affecting her.
