Orientalism, The Gerudo, and Legend of Zelda | SWANA Representation in Gaming
It took a while, but here's a video essay about the portrayal of the Gerudo and the ways they reinforce orientalist beliefs about SWANA people, the portrayal of the Gerudo, and the broader storytelling implications that come about because of it.
00:00 Introduction03:06 What is Racial Coding? (The Deku and Cannibal Horror)06:13 Orientalism09:22 Ganondorf - The Wicked Man of the Deser
The land and society once owned by the gods must be restored and brought to its former glory as it is fated to be led by the divinely chosen Hylians, the chosen descendants tied to the gods. To that end, to defeat the evil and violent Middle Easterner who has defied the natural order of Hyrule, everyone must sacrifice themselves for Link to become the divine governor of power.

Closing Thoughts
Gerudos, victims of collective punishment, genocide and ethnic cleansing might by the better word all because of one man’s action despite Nabooru’s sacrifice for Hyrule cause his action weight stronger than her heroic deeds, while Ganondorf is responsible for the consequences, it was the king of hyrule who gave those orders to murder them in all three(at least child and adult) timelines making himself worser than Ganondorf, cause he never went for a group of people, he didn’t extinguished the hyrulian people, even the other implied genocide was by the hyrulian kingdom against the sheikah
Interview with the Gerudo in the Horseback Archery Field who challenges Link to beat her score of 1,500 points .
Ganons Claims of wanting to help in TWW.
In the Wind Waker Ganon Claims his previous actions were motivated by a desire to help his people, The Gerudo, but I call shenanigans on that.
In OOT, after taking over Hyrule, Ganon turns it into an active hellhole, complete with zombies running amok. There is not even the slightest implication he is helping his people or making life better for them. Not once did he try to help them.
At the end of the game the Gerudo are actively celebrating Ganon's defeat. Keep in mind , he was the only male of their race. For them to be happy he's gone, really says something.
Tears Of The Kingdom Ganondorf represents as the most Gerudo than he ever gerodoed before!
His hair is styled like the Gerudo in Ocarina of Time
The shoes he is wearing are similar to the sand boots
On his arm is the Gerudo symbol
the half open chest style he is wearing is smiliar to the "Voe armor"
he wears GOLDEN earrings! Almost every Gerudo wears earrings with at least some gold in it!
And overall he has a lot more jewlery on him than he does in other games! Also something thats typical Gerudo!
Im so happy and glad that after that many games Nintendo rememberd Ganondorfs origin and where he originally came from! Hes a Gerudo! And in this game he is fully showing it!
I really hope they do something with that!
I heard that when a mother is stressed, male embryos are usually the first to be terminated by the body, which now makes me think that the reason male Gerudos are so rare is just that living in the desert puts the Gerudo through so much stress that the people have grown accustomed and don't even notice it, but if a tribe were to spend a handful of generations living in a less stressful environment, there (hypothetically) could be more males than just Ganondorf. (Not sure if there is an in-game reason other than just "that how it be")
This has also kinda spurred the headcanon that the single male more often than not gets popped out by the one girl who left the desert five years ago and you start to wonder how she's doing just seconds before she strolls into the village, holding up her two-day-old son like Simba from Lion King.
............ holy shit, anon.
I actually did not know that. This being a race heavily based in fantasy, I can see it being even more severe for gerudos, maybe, as for why they'd just stop having baby boys for a whole century at a time.
Thank you for this ask.
(Pretty sure the canon explanation really is just 'that how it be' so this one is much more interesting. I've also thought about other gerudo tribes/kingdoms who might have the rare male happen, but killed the thought before I could accidentally make an OC.)
