Silly snippet that I scrapped from something I actually did post because it was a tangent, but I can't stop thinking about it.

What is UP with Gary and Betty stopping people from eating tempting food in a building we later learn is:

A) Owned by magical beings who lure people into contracts without disclosing the fine print?

B) Already home to one person who's been trapped for 60 years when the building itself has only existed for a little over 10 years?

I don't like that at all!!

We know the Learn-a-torium has only existed for a decade at most, because we know Flappy Bob is 37 during the Musical and that H.P. gave him the blueprints the day he graduated Harvard as a lawyer:

I've always written that off as an inconsistency, but in our world's lore, don't people get trapped in the fairy world - where time moves differently - if they eat fairy food?

I mean, Gary and Betty did say they would "be friends forever" with Timmy if Vicky never came back... Like, they just skipped over the part about his parents possibly picking him up. That's kinda weird.

Are Gary and Betty interfering - i.e. refusing to let kids eat the delicious-looking ice cream and cookies the Learn-a-torium inexplicably offers - because they don't want other kids to get locked into some Pixie contract?

Like... This place is owned by Pixies. Their name is literally on the wall (or at least on a wall phone that's confirmed to be a direct line to Sanderson), so it's not like it's a secret-

Parents send their kids here... Are they absentmindedly signing papers that secretly lock them into surrendering their child if the child eats sweets there??

That's not outside the realm of possibility. We know Pixies are scummy and slip things into the tiny fine print you need a microscope to read... sometimes even a VERY powerful microscope:

And we know Gary and Betty were very insistent that the kids in their care eat things like soy and broccoli, not the premade ice cream and cookies. Betty even feeds the babies in the daycare room soy, and she seems to like it herself since she volunteered to eat the soy cubes Gary offered to Timmy.

It's probable their own diet consists of soy, veggies, bread, water, tofu, granola, and sugar-free powder drinks- Things on the list of stuff they charge parents for during the "Get Flappy" song, which implies that's the food they're giving kids:

Kinda weird they have ice cream sundaes and chocolate chip cookies just there in the Learnatorium, but they'll switch them out for soy before kids touch them...

Alternatively, did Gary stop Betty from giving Timmy ice cream and cookies because they're fighting over which of THEM can abduct more children? She did put it in Timmy's lap before Gary snatched it away, which is a bold move for someone who didn't want him to eat it.

If they were on the same page that ice cream and cookies are bad, why would they go through the effort of preparing that and give it to Timmy in the first place? That's sus, Betty...

This place is so dang cursed.

I say this a lot, but I really love the Learnatorium crew... Every time one of them is onscreen, they just get me in a slam dunk.

Gary and Betty are such wildfire fellas. I like how their singing pops balloons... it's just a little hint of them not being as sugar sweet as they seem on the surface. They are LAUGHABLY BAD with kids, but not even for the reason Timmy dislikes them.

Timmy thinks they're annoying and boring, but I'm more concerned with the fact that they throw babies, harass children, lock kids in cramped cages, and cause property damage without hesitation. And they have, like... NO fear.

Flappy's #1 fans...

Just ?? the entire concept of the Learnatorium being a place crammed with fun stuff and sweet treats, but Gary and Betty hover over you and prevent you from playing with or eating any of it is hilarious... why are they even here...

The scene of Flappy chasing after Gary yelling about how he needs to back off with his hugs because Betty "doesn't like him like that" cracks me up every time. They are Workplace Relationship BFFs... Gary has no sense of personal space.

And they clocked Timmy as a godkid SO HARD... They go STRAIGHT for him when they get back from Florida, even though he's a literal baby, and punish him specifically.

They keep an adult prisoner in their yard (Pops) and chase him down when he escapes and haul him back... that's messed up, man...

They were literally down to keep Timmy there forever when he said his babysitter was "never coming back..." Their response was to glance at each other and then yell "YAY! We're going to be friends forever!" Like ?? They lure in children and they have a bunch of traps lying around that are activated when they clap their hands?

Tell me you're in bed with the enemy (child-snatching fey) without telling me you're in bed with the enemy

They only had three episodes, and they did NOT waste them.

What does it say about Flappy that after HE switched to the good side, he didn't even ask Gary and Betty if they wanted to join him...

Maybe he just knows Gary's too busy bein' a NARC!!!

Does Flappy know?? Does Flappy know. I think about it constantly, but I really want to know how Flappy reacted to finding out Gary and Betty [are implied to] have known about magic before he did and were keeping it from him. But I don't think he found out...

You just know they fight about the spelling of Learnatorium since it's spelled differently when Gary and Betty take over... lmao

And ?? besides Flappy, the only other person we know works in this building is Pete the Polar Bear? There's a very real possibility Doug Dimmadome used his flamethrower on their stuff one time?

Gary and Betty went to space and tried to make friends with Mark Chang and that's not even a joke; that's actually what they tried to do?? Cut scene from the OG "Totally Spaced Out" script where Gary and Betty tried to run away to Mexico despite having kids under their care at the time? As a team, this crew canonically ruled the entire planet? Unparalleled.

I just looked and Gary and Betty are listed on the FOP Wiki as villains, whereas Flappy isn't even under the Villains Turned Allies section. I mean, I always think of them as neutral, but...

Yeah, that's fair.

Riddle watches New Wish - Post #9

I like how Hazel seems to be making friends one at a time! I feel like most shows introduce friends as pre-established, or they become friends in the first episode. Hazel seems to be gathering them over time, which is great.

Why is he even allowed to HAVE those drones?

... Shout-out to Wynn (sp? I don't dare look since I'm avoiding spoilers) for having freckles on only one cheek. Definitely unique for this universe.

I really like how Wanda has stuck to calling Hazel "squirt." It's super fitting for her.

I think it's funny that Cosmo and Wanda's running gag is talking about things they did on their 10k-year vacation since one of the things they did in the OG series was talk about how they'd been married 10k years.

Hazel speeding through her remaining time with a song montage is very funny.

Listen. Listen, I know they would never do this because it was such a one-off thing. but... Flappy used to carry Gary and Betty in his briefcase and it was so weird. I'm gettin' flashbacks.

I liked that episode! That was great.

I like how Violin Gal is a recurring gag.

Why are they teaching 12 minus 1 in 5th grade- Oh, they're simplifying fractions.

Timmy is on even more posters in this school- What did he do? This isn't even his city.

Pudding-eating episode going a zombie movie route was not on my list. Fantastic. I'm glad Cosmo and Wanda's crowns glow in the dark; it's great.

Hazel not wanting to unwish her infinite pudding wish because she hasn't gotten any yet is super clever and justified.

Jasmine: I am once again sus of my BFF Hazel and her connection to weirdness.

Okay, with the lights off in the halls, this is a lot more difficult on my hemophobia... I don't think I'll be sharing screenshots I might run across later, though I definitely think Dev's zombie pose is great.

Holy cow, that's a lot of red lighting on the pudding. I don't think I'm watching this one again, but I'm enjoying the plot itself.

We are once again treated to a photo proving they have 2D bodies in this universe, and it once again cracks me up.

This is what reality is like when you jump the border to Retroville. Everything looks bulgy, but in reality... you're still flat. I especially like how reality morphs to fit the FOP style, like the pink hair flipping around. I think I've seen someone with their haircut like that in the old show, though I forget who, so that would imply they wear it like the first picture.

Unreasonably funny to me that Dev's glasses shine - usually a classy blue - becomes much duller when it switches to "actual FOP style." His coolness factor drops. I love it.

... His hair REALLY reminds me of his dad's. I distinctly remember Dale's being fluffy, which is why he looks like the pixie godkid listed in Da Rules, but... Dev's got the same "front flare." I'm gonna look it up.

-> Oh, "Nectar of the Odds" is Season 2, not 3. I did not remember that. Also, Dale's hair is a little more orange than I remember, and he really does have dark blue eyes. I can absolutely see the similarities between him and Dev. That's fantastic.

... I am just now remembering I think I have a character outline for Dale in my Along the Cherry Lane draft. Let me see...

SLDKJFSLDKFJ, I did! I had him marrying Ed Leadly's daughter (the first FOP OC I ever made, Hadley) and having a son named Dave, which is very close to Dev.

I don't really know what to do with this information. I think I want to do less with this information. I'm so sorry, Hadley- maybe Dev will get a canon mom.

Well, Dev having red hair when you have black probably saved you, tbh.

She doesn't have her dad's black hair. I misremembered. It's brown. Uh-oh.

Anyway, I LOVE how Hazel saw her "ruined" class picture and was ecstatic because she knew her mom and brother would love how memorable it was. That's super cute. She's living a great life.

I don't know if I'd still call her miserable enough for a fairy, but she's adorable and I'm glad her life is going okay.

And still... he lurks.

I cannot believe we're getting the 2nd "living hair" plot (Hair with personality vs. hair with spirit), though I doubt this one will go the helicopter route.

Diana and Sparky would be great friends. I will not elaborate.

Crying, Hazel admiring her bald head and thinking it's cool. Her motivation for getting her hair back is so her hair doesn't cause chaos? She's so pure.

I hate them.

Just heard Hazel say Cosmo's name. Has she said Wanda's name often? I feel like their names haven't been repeated a lot for new audiences, but I also wasn't paying attention.

They're Thaddeus and Dominika to me, but their friends found those names a mouthful when they were kids, so they got shortened to Tad and Mom, and then Dad and Mom.

Here's a rough snippet from the 130 Prompt "Refusal" that's been sitting in my WIPs folder for ages:

“Dominika, come back! Wait!” “Everyone calls me Mom.” “Well…” Tad made a show of tapping his cheek and his foot at the same time. “Could I just call you… the love of my life?” “Um. Let’s just stick with ‘Mom’ for now and see where things go from there.” More like, Mom of My Future Child. “Hi, Mom. I’m Dad.”

In "Inspection Detection", Jorgen grades godparents based on how happy their child is. The happier Timmy is, the better Cosmo and Wanda are. But in "The Switch Glitch", Vicky's happiness was a reason to take Cosmo and Wanda away. This seems contradictory. Is there some threshold of happiness that a godparent ought to meet, while going beyond that shows the godparent isn't needed anymore? Does it depend on the godchild's testimony (which was unreliable in Vicky's case because she'd been tricked)?

That’s correct. Godparents are given to miserable kids in order to treat them to a better life than they would have otherwise had. When a godkid’s memories are taken away, the exact details of events get lost, but the hazy memories of having an enjoyable childhood stay there. 

The idea is to help neglected kids learn valuable life skills so that they can take care of themselves someday, and for a fairy to be a trusted figure that a godkid can confide in as they navigate the perils of life. If a godkid’s state has worsened since fairies have been introduced into their life, that’s obviously a problem. If it seems clear that a godkid should be able to function normally in society and that they’re on a good path for life, fairies are reassigned so that they can help someone else who’ll benefit from their company. Fairies aren’t supposed to be taken away to be mean. It’s to help as many kids as possible. 

Fairies are sometimes taken away as punishment, however. I have this tentative headcanon that a godkid IS actually allowed to tell other kids that they have fairy godparents without losing their fairies- the “good” kids who are kind, could keep a secret, would be understanding… the kids who would be allowed to have fairies themselves if they had miserable lives! 

For example, Timmy doesn’t know this, but Chester would be one of the kids on the green list (See also, “It’s a Wishful Life” and that scene towards the end of “Fairy Idol” when Chester overheard Norm tell Timmy that he, Chester, was the reason Timmy lost his godparents earlier. Chester’s a gentle child and I have a feeling that he suspects Timmy plays with magic or science as it is. He wouldn’t know all the details, but he might suspect that, say, Mark Chang is some sort of otherworldly guardian of Timmy. Remember “The Big Scoop”? He’s had an absentminded eye on Timmy for a long time).

Mikey Munroe is another green list kid. The fairies in charge of such things (Amity, mostly) have seen how kind and understanding he is with a fantastic being like Bunsen, and they figure they can probably trust him with a few of their secrets. Although of course, they would wipe his fairy memories if he just went around blabbing to people. If we want to keep with canon, Amanda most likely had hers wiped after “Beast of Friends”. I can think of no reason she’d be allowed to keep them.

But Tootie can’t keep a secret and could cause a lot of headache if she had a fairy (Especially since she’s likely to tell groups in bulk, and tbh erasing people’s minds isn’t good for anyone’s health. See also, Denzel Crocker). A.J. scoffs at magic and would be more interested in dissecting a magical being, so they’re off the table. For similar reasons, so is Trixie. 

Who else is or was on the green list? Maybe Chloe, Kevin Crocker… Sheldon Dinkleberg… Elmer, definitely; the boy with the sentient boil should have no problems suspending his disbelief for fairies. The Burger World employee! Gary and Betty are allowed to know because they work at a daycare center and see a lot of kids. After awhile, you start to recognize the presence of magic (It also helps when you’ve hung around pixies for most of your life). 

But Flappy Bob wouldn’t have been on the list for reasons that are too extensive to justify including here. And Chet Ubetcha would’ve been allowed as a kid (Didn’t I mention I love “Anchors Away”?) Uh… Probably Sam and Tucker could know, but maybe not Danny? Danny isn’t always as subtle as his pals. Maybe Rudy Tabootie, but I’m kind of resistant to that idea too (He’s a kid who would probably believe, but wouldn’t handle it well b/c ego problems). Jimmy Neutron is an absolute definite no, but maybe the Pines twins would be okay!

You get the idea. Basically, kids who are willing to believe are allowed to know, and those who are skeptical and/or would likely abuse fairies are not. Because many kids (like Timmy himself) have hearts of gold and might struggle with identifying which of their peers they can and can’t trust, they’re just told not to tell anyone (Perhaps this goes along with the “Godparents aren’t allowed to tell godkids which other godkids have fairies” rule? Although I assume client confidentiality is also involved. Oh my gosh- what if there was a thing here about fairies being taken away out of punishment for breaking client confidentiality by revealing their godkid to people, and thus implying said godkid is struggling with… Huh. Interesting… Of course, a client could grant permission, so…)

That aside, emotions are powerful things for fairies. Jorgen and those working at Amity wouldn’t want to feel guilty if a godkid tells their friend they have a fairy, and that friend becomes super jealous and acts all, “Why didn’t you tell me this a long time ago?” Yeah, much easier to just say, “Tell no one”.

So blabbing about godparents in public spaces isn’t okay (Ex: “Secret Origins of Denzel Crocker”). It’s generally not advisable to tell your friends you have fairy godparents because it might strain your friendship. I guess this green list rule functions more along the lines of “Don’t tell anyone directly, but if this person happens to find out you have fairies, we’ll look the other way unless they give us a reason to look back”. Timmy strolling up to Chester and outright admitting he has fairies who could grant all of Chester’s wishes is a different situation than Chester catching a brief glimpse of them through a window.

Amity don’t like to be mean. They want to help people, but the safety of Fairy World must always come first. They don’t like giving godparents out to kids who can’t keep secrets. What if that kid blabbed to tons of people on a subway, and the fairies lost track of who he told, and some people got away with their memories? What if they heard the part about how miserable kids get fairies, so they kidnapped some children and tortured them? So much could go wrong.

But, if a fairy felt that they were taken unfairly from a godkid, they could argue about it in court and potentially win a godkid’s memories back. Though, the Council really don’t like to do that much. This is where you get into politics like Magnifico v. Amity Angel Safety and Protective Recall Agency (the case allowing Juandissimo to become Remy’s godparent again on the grounds that Remy’s mental health significantly improved from baseline when he had Juan in his life, and significantly dropped after “reversal” when Juan left him).

Basically, Juandissimo successfully convinced the Council that Remy is more miserable than a vast majority of the kids he could be reassigned to, and that Remy should be given a second chance. Remy’s situation is very unusual, but Fairies don’t really like leaving bitter rich kids to grow up and become bitter rich and powerful adults, so the Council agreed (See also, “Remy Rides Again”).

To recap, a godparent is assigned to a kid, data is gathered, and if a godkid’s satisfaction is too low then this problem needs to be addressed. Godkid should maintain a neutral / happy lifestyle when with a fairy. Then, if you have all these miserable children in need of godparents, and all your godparents are out in the field already, you’ll take the fairy assigned to the happiest and most well-adjusted godkid, right? Because that’s the child least in need of help, who has probably reached a stable point in their life and will lead a stable adulthood too.
