D.R.A.M (Does Real Ass Music)

Meet D.R.A.M, the artist behind the internet’s dance anthem, "Cha Cha" which has an unique blend of Latin and hip hop beat. The 26 year old rapper/singer/songwriter considers himself as doing "Real Ass Music" to the point that he goes by the name, D.R.A.M, which means - Does Real Ass Music. He comes straight out of Hampton, VA bringing us a soulful sound of creative raps with a variety of jazz and electric daring sounds.

Last year, D.R.A.M dropped his mixtape, “1 Epic Summer”, that was crafted and recorded in his own room. The mixtape, which featured “Cha Cha”, told the tales of how great his summer was with festive, fun-loving beats. With the sound of his music being a mix of various sounds, D.R.A.M felt as if his sound was rare, and not put out into the world just yet.

In March, the mixtape was re-released as “#1EpicEP” on iTunes and Spotify. Beyonce was drawn into D.R.A.M’s internet buzz when she posted a video on Instagram dancing to “Cha Cha” captioning the video “this song makes me happy!” As the frenzy continued on the internet, rapper Drake posted on his Soundcloud “Hotline Bling Remix to Cha Cha”, which has since been deleted. As Drake’s “Hotline Bling” grew on the charts, the song went from a remix to being reworked. 

With D.R.A.M being an underground artist “Hotline Bling” received more recognition than “Cha Cha” which made the rapper feel as if his song got jacked. As “Cha Cha” started making its round on the internet, the comparisons of the two songs began. Both songs shared the same sample song, but D.R.A.M spiced his up adding a sample of Super Mario World. Drake on the other hand cleared up confusion in his Fader interview saying, “both song share the same rhythmic thread.”

Besides the internet mayhem, D.R.A.M has recently released his new EP “Gahdamn! EP” whichfeatures his song with TDE singer SZA “Caretaker”. He has worked in the studio with Rick Rubin and Chance the Rapper who he is now on the “Family Matters Tour” until November 25th.
