6. Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow.

Do you wait for big clumps of your beautiful hair to fall out in your hands or are you going to be the master of your destiny?

Red Bull gives you wings. Cancer gives you Balls.

“I want it all chopped off please.” The young girl at the Vidal Sassoon Academy laughs nervously. “It doesn’t matter what you do, I’m going to be bald in a month.” 

Her hands shake as she cuts my ponytail. I’m not sure who should be more nervous right now. “Ouch.... oh I’ve cut myself. Just a minute, I need to get a plaster.” Oh Lordy! I feel sorry for this sweet girl. No pressure or anything. Just a chick with cancer and a teacher breathing down her neck. I suddenly get flashbacks to my 16 year old self. Cutting my long blonde hair to within an inch of it’s life WOULD instantly transform me into Eve the sex goddess from Dawsons Creek it REALLY WOULD! How wrong was I. Instead, I looked like Ethel from Eastenders. As the hairdresser blow dried my new granny coiffure, a single tear fell down my cheek. And I knew in that moment. Not a single boy would kiss me for a whole year until it grew back. Being a teenager was tough. 

The nice girl comes back with a big blue plaster and continues to cut to her hearts content. Hello Mia Farrow. Not bad at all.

Dave was a dude. As he bleached the bejesus out of my hair we had a great old chin wag. He’d been an embalmer his whole life and decided now was the time to work with people who were a bit more alive. His first customer all those years ago was a newborn baby he collected from Great Ormond Street hospital. He remembers holding this tiny lifeless baby and thinking how lucky he was to have lived such a fulfilled life already. He was 15 years old. Life’s a bitch. So we hold on to those horns and ride the hell out of it. 

By the time he finishes, I resemble Annie Lennox’s love child and Dave looks like a seagull has taken a crap on his head! He forgot about the peroxide on his rubber gloves every time he scratched his head! What a guy.

“Thanks Dave. I bloody love it!” (Scrap Annie. I look like Yazz from the 80’s!)
