Razzle flicks ash off the end of his cigar, tilts his head in question. “that’s a new pup.”

“yes,” says Locke, carefully putting a hand on the new guy’s shoulder. it’s impossible not to see him flinch. “this is Red. he’s going to be staying with me for a while!”

“Red, huh?” he smells a little like Blue and a lot like something else, something bad. Razzle doesn’t like it but - it’s not his job to argue. it’s his job to take names and flash a smile, so he does, and he says, “it’s good to meet you, pup.”

the licorice wolves are howling in the distance and Razzle shouldn’t, he knows this, knows that it breaks every protocol around but

it’s too dark to play cards and

no one else is around so

he throws his head back

and gives an answering howl

groundhog day - traveling

a big thanks to @deadlyessencewhispers for listening to me talk through the concept of waystones and fast travel, and just being generally awesome!

there are several ways to travel within Fara. most common, of course, is simply to walk somewhere. most people live close to where they work (Blue is the exception, though he just splinches into work in the mornings) so time is not a huge inconvenience in that manner.

there are also waystations. these are strange devices scattered about all of Fara, which serve as a teleportation device of sorts. they are seldom used, due to the fact that one must have a waystone for each use, and waystone’s are extremely expensive.     waystations are also put in very inconvenient spots. for example, the waystation that takes you into the Capitol is very literally sitting inside of the fountain. anyone and everyone that uses this waystation is put into the fountain, which means a day of having wet feet and trousers. some of them let you out right on the edge of a cliff, twelve miles outside of a town, or in other inconvenient locations.    they are often prone to glitching. you should never take an item of importance through a waystation, as these items have the tendency to vanish from your inventory. they are actually going into the Between, but no one realizes that.

slightly more common than waystation usage but still far less common than simply walking somewhere is the Fast Travel Carriage System. this is a carriage pulled by two dog horses. are there more than one carriages? is it just one carriage that answers every call? literally no one knows, this system is a complete mystery to almost everyone, including the Royal Scientists.     it’s run by the Collector; a strange being that takes payment in the form of oddities and coin. it’s a toss-up which will be asked for, so you’d best only call them if prepared to pay in both ways. if demanding coin, the Collector charges an exorbitant amount. if asking for an oddity, anything from a particularly large marble to a slip of pretty abalone will be taken.    the Collector is an extremely strange sort, very unsettling to be around. between the price of the ride and the air of unease that being around the Collector instills in you, this is not a popular choice of travel. those who work in Midnight’s Court, including the scientist’s, are given a coin that allows them free travel with the Collector.    the carriage can cross the entire country in a matter of minutes.     don’t trust the Collector.

Butterfly People - names that will come up

Motti: based on a satin moth, Blue’s “work friend”, and someone that he’s known for a very long time. they’re researching the Code of the World together.

Farfalla: based on a glasswing butterfly. a coding specialist.

Leptir: based on a peacock pansy butterfly. specializes in beta codes.

Kapu: based on a garden tiger moth. the head of the labs.

Arna: based on an orange oakleaf butterfly. Kapu’s personal assistant. 

Gwyfyn: based on a Palos Verdas Blue. the personal assistant to the Butterfly Person.

Kamla: based on a rosy maple moth. one of the Queen’s handmaidens.

The Butterfly Person: a total mystery, hidden away. the Queen’s right hand man.

how many characters do you have in Groundhog Day so far?

…this question is tricky, because there are technically two mirror worlds and??? a bunch of characters i haven’t named yet but are still important so???

i think i’m around a cast of 25 at the moment, with five main PoV’s and two occasional “guest” PoV’s.

but i’m still working on building up the Royal Guard in Fara Falls, the rest of the scientists that Blue works with, and the rest of Midnight’s Court, not to mention the network of spiderlings in Fara Falls and the various characters that are involved with Code of the World.

Cordial has virtually no importance to the story but she does exist and, like most people, finds herself very chummy with Locke. she works as the sentry that mans the barrier around the Royal Labs, and spends most of her day drawing all over her important paper work.

perpetually bored, Cordial has a bright red pompadour and always wears lipstick in fashionably bright colors. she’s a humanoid type, with a flair for lightning magic and battle axes.

i guess that Locke’s bird dragon is named Hayley now? she’s a sweetheart and technically not his, so much as a stray that lets itself into his house on the regular

What more can you tell me about Ginia?

a lot, actually! she’s a pretty neat character, even though she’s more of a secondary main than anything else! 

*runs a flower shop in the Capitol

*a plant elemental with a prosthetic leg

*served as a paladin during the Delta War

*just wants to live with her plants and her girlfriend in peace

*dating the captain of the guards, Polynya

*ends up working as the Royal Gardener

*a soft girl who would not approve of Polynya’s deal with Midnight

*you know that anima thing with the pastel background and the rose petals flutter? she can do the rose petal thing

*she can also turn said rose petals into a weapon but doesn’t like to talk about that

*so many freckles!!!! green freckles!!!!

*paladins are scary because they have an intimate knowledge of how HP works

*she might be a demure soft spoken plant lady but she can also bench press basically anyone

*dirt stains on everything that she owns

*literally her house is always covered in dirt and sand

*plants all over her house, which is built into the upper floor of the flower shop

*becomes very attached to a small baby humboar in the Queen’s “candy shop”

*doesnt understand sarcasm very well

*will treat anyone that’s injured, no matter which side of the war theyre on

*the only one smart enough to tell that Locke’s hiding something

*tends to be brushed aside as a “healer” or a “child” and it makes her very angry but also

*she’s capable of using both those things to get what she wants at the end of the day

*and if what she wants is access to normally off limits part of Midnight’s castle? well, she’s but a humble gardener, my queen

*can play the piano

*she is either in sun dresses and gowns, or overalls with no shirt on under it there’s no in between

*uses honey in everything

*makes a mean gallon of sugar water, which has gotten her in with some of the Butterfly People

*why yes she does know Motti why do you ask?

*did you know that the trees had voices? did you know that they spoke of Hope?

*could listen to Polynya talk about the stars forever

*loves the warmth and the summer sun

*believes that there is always new growth hidden beneath the frost

*also knows that sometimes weeds have to be pulled out for the rest of the garden to grow

*loves shiny things and marbles and has a large collection of them
