This was originally a reblog on one of @phoebeejeebies posts but I'm still internally screaming about it so you can now suffer with us! (if you want more context go read theirs first)

OK! I NEED TO RANT BECAUSE BRAIN ROT OF THIS SCENE AND THE IMPLICATIONS HAVE NOT GONE AWAY SINCE I LEFT THE THEATER!

Phoebe takes the chess set with her, knowing no one will be there because it's night time. She does all of this as if it is a routine she does once a week. It doesn't feel like a spur of the moment decision. This is something she has done multiple times since moving to New York.

Now we do need to mention, she is a fifteen year old alone in New York City at night in a park. That is a really stupid thing to do alone in any city at night no matter your age. The repetitive nature with which she does this suggests to me that she isn't worried about this because she knows that she isn't alone.

I have yet to listen to the soundtrack for GFE, but I have an ear for music cues and reprises (Infinity War and Endgame were music goldmines for me and I remember losing my mind at the music choices in the theater, so much so that my silent nerding out annoyed my dad). Somehow, without knowing that the reused the first bit of Chess, I recognized what the tune implied along with Phoebe's actions.

I don't remember who plays first, but when the other chess piece moves, she looks around as if she's looking for someone. Again! Keep in mind, this is a weekly occurrence. She isn't confused because she's playing chess with a ghost, she's confused because Egon has yet to materialize.

When Melody materializes, Phoebe is disappointed that it isn't him. You can see it in her face. This is something sacred that she does with her grandfather once a week. Something her family doesn't know about. Ok, maybe Trevor knows.

If Egon did/does actually come back to visit, you can't tell me he only spent time with Phoebe. He literally helped Trevor fix the Ecto in GA, he was supervising Trev the entire time. There's even a small moment when the Ecto is going through the field that you can see the silhouette of another person in the car through the back windshield. I highly doubt Egon would let his grandson do something so reckless unsupervised. (Yes this was probably a camera man or a member of the stunt crew or something, but if it were, wouldn't they have removed it?)

After being benched, Phoebe needs someone to talk to, someone who will understand, and he isn't there. Instead, there's this ghost of some girl that's on fire and, oh, she's kinda cute...

NOW! IF this is something Phoebe and Egon do regularly (as is implied), why isn't he there?

I think, he heard about Garraka down some spiritual grape vine and knows that the ice age personified can control other spirits, or maybe he read something about it during self imposed watch duty in Summerville. The only reason Melody isn't being controlled like a puppet is because she made a deal with Garraka. Egon would know how dangerous being around the orb is.

These are his friends we're talking about. This is his family! He left to protect them by standing on the front line when no one else would. They are his world at this point. If his being there even as a ghost is what will put them in danger, then he is going to stay the fuck away if it will keep them safe.

The night after everything has thawed, I'd like to think that Phoebe went out at night and went back to the park without the chess set. He was waiting for here there, ready to comfort her in the way he couldn't a few days before.

*takes a deep breath, then screams* AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Time to put my favorite characters in situations. One week into a new fanbase and a friend and I are thinking of making an AU. Get out of my head.

It starts with a commercial and a familiar voice.

"Do you experience feelings of dread in your basement or attic?"

I sit up from the rug, tossing the magazine I was reading to the side. That voice... I would recognize that voice anywhere.

There, on my television screen, is the last person I thought I would see on a Sunday afternoon. Egon Spengler.

The same Egon Spengler, albeit a bit older, I had a crush on in high school. The one who was forced to tutor me as punishment after a mishap involving some invention causing a scene during a school assembly was right there on my television screen talking about capturing ghosts. Checks out.

I hadn't seen him since high school, hadn't thought too much about him after those years, but-- I remember being hopelessly smitten and shy around him. So shy, I could barely talk to him at times as he tried to teach me calculus in the back of the school's library.

My friends didn't understand the crush. He was the school's anomaly; people steered clear of the 'Spengler boy'. But to me, he was brilliant. Much too smart to be stuck with the type of people in our school.

And he was cute. I always thought he was rather cute. He was nerdy and intellectual, but he was broody as well. 

I'm certain my parents still have a few notebooks packed up in my room with his name scribbled all over them in my silly, swirly teenage cursive.

The next shot of the commercial is a close-up of Egon and the other two... Ghostbusters. Of course, he was still cute. Maybe, even cuter than he was in high school.

The number for the business appears on the screen: Ghostbusters 555-2368. I leap up to grab the pen and notepad off the counter by the fridge, chanting the number quietly to myself to keep it fresh in my mind.

I don't have any... ghosts or paranormal spooks in my apartment, but maybe I would? Has anyone ever wished to be haunted before? Or is this a 'me' thing?

Or a desperate 'I would love to see the guy who I was madly in love with in high school' thing? Whatever angle I try to look at it from is bad, but I write the number down anyways, sticking it to the fridge with the 'I Heart NYC' magnet I bought when I moved here after college.

I stare at the number for a while longer. 

I suppose... no, that's insane... but I'm sure they get plenty of false alarms... No! I can't just call and pretend I have a ghost in my apartment to see him. That would be ridiculous.

Borderline certifiable.

But, how often do high school crushes appear on your television with the number to reach them? Not often enough to ignore this perfect opportunity to reconnect. 

I pick up the phone, beginning to dial the number. Oh my god! I slam the phone back down. What on Earth was I doing! I'm way too old to be doing this... way too old to still feel the lingering effects of a high school crush.

I walk back to my living room, pacing for a few minutes. The chances are he has a girlfriend, or he's married... or maybe he has a boyfriend, and I'm barking up the wrong tree...!

I make my way back to the phone, my hand hovering over it. I just need to see him. If I see him, I'll be able to stop thinking about him, and I can go on with my life.

When I dial the number this time, I let it ring. 

"Hello, Ghostbusters," The voice of a woman says through the phone.

"Um, hi."

"What's the problem?" 

What was the problem... "There's something in my apartment that I think-- It's a ghost?"

"What's your address?" She asks in an uninterested tone.

I tell her and wait quietly for her next question.

"They'll be at your apartment in the next hour."

"Thank you--" The line goes dead, and anxiety fills me. Hopefully, this wouldn't end up being the dumbest thing I've ever done.

Three loud knocks rouse me from the couch. Nerves fill my stomach as I walk towards the door, regretting turning on the television this afternoon.

Opening the door slowly, I see the other two men from the commercial. My heart sinks to the floor. Just my luck! He didn't even come here!

"Hello, Miss. We're the Ghostbusters. We got your call earlier this afternoon?" The one with 'Stantz' written on his jumpsuit says.

"Ah-- yes. Come in." My smile is tight as I open the door wider. 

I do a doubletake when the door is completely open. There he is, standing in my hallway. Instantly I know that I've made a mistake. Seeing him isn't going to make this any better.

"Miss?" Stantz looks behind his shoulder but only sees his colleague.

"Oh, sorry." I move out of the way to let them into the apartment. Egon walks past me without acknowledging that he knows me, and I feel my heart plummet to the lobby. Maybe to the center of the Earth.

"What seems to be the problem?" The other one, Venkman, asks. He's leaning just a tad too close for comfort. I take a step back, laughing uncomfortably.

Think (y/n), think! What could be a plausible ghost story? I glance over at Egon, who is watching me with interest.

"Well, I saw a figure walk from my uh-- bedroom through the living room." The three men watch my hand as I map out the fake ghost's walk across my home. 

"Interesting. What did it look like?" Only Stantz seems to believe me, continuing to ask questions I half-assedly answer.

All three of them stay in the general vicinity of the living room, Stantz and Venkman talking loudly by the couch, Egon closer to me. He's holding some sort of handheld device in his hand, watching it with interest.

"Uh-- do you detect anything with... that?" I nod towards the odd machine in Egon's hands.

"No."

"Oh..." I try to think of something else to say, settling on introducing myself. "I'm (y/n), by the way."

I expect a, 'I know' or maybe even a 'how have you been,' instead, in the driest of tones, he says, "Egon."

Oh my god. He doesn't recognize me! He so clearly has no idea who I am. Six months of Tuesday evenings spent for nothing in the end because Egon Spengler doesn't even remember me... I've made the worst mistake calling these people.

"I know." He looks at me, brow furrowed in confusion, so I continue to talk, "(y/n) (y/l/n). We went to the same high school." Oh, what I would give to have a ghost pull me to the depths of hell right about now. Egon tilts his head ever so slightly as if he's trying to place me. "You tutored me when you were a senior? In calculus..."

"Oh, (y/n)."

Embarrassed laughter bubbles up from my chest. Oh my god! I'm so stupid. That'll teach me for lying. "You don't remember me at all, do you?"

"No, I remember. You always had homemade chocolate chip cookies."

I nod slowly, "You do remember."

Egon looks over my head. I turn to look at what's caught his attention and find it's his friends watching us. Nice, everyone knows I'm pathetic now.

"There doesn't seem to be anything irregular in your apartment," Peter explains to the woman. Her eyes keep going to Egon, barely listening to Peter talking to her.

Who knew women could be attracted to the oddity that was Egon Spengler. 

Certainly, Peter wasn't aware of that possibility, but here it was right in front of him, fidgety and nervous.

"Oh. Thank you for coming anyway." He feels for this woman. Peter had an inkling that (y/n) found out about Egon and hoped that by calling them, he would react to seeing her again after all these years.

Peter flicks Egon on the forehead the moment (y/n) shuts her door, "Egon, you putz."

"What was that for?" Egon rubs at the quickly reddening spot.

"That woman so clearly has the hots for you! And you didn't even have the decency to pretend to be excited to see her again!" Egon looks to Ray for clarification.

Ray only shrugs, "She was laying it on pretty strong, Spengs."

"I bet she's had a little crush on you since high school, and you had to be told by me, over ten years later, to get it through that thick skull." Peter lifts his hand to flick him in the forehead again, but Egon ducks away to avoid the attack.

"I really don't think--"

Peter makes a buzzer noise, "Wrong."

"But--"

"Listen, I could knock on this door right now," he points to the door for emphasis, "ask her if she has a thing for you, and I guarantee you she'd say yes."

"Venkman, c'mon--" Ray tries desperately to quell the conversation, or at least bring the volume down. He knows what Peter is saying is right; the woman was practically glued to Egon's side while they looked for this so-called ghost in her apartment. But Ray also was aware doors were usually thin enough to hear an argument through.

"Would I really steer you wrong, Egon? I mean, you know I know everything about women."

Egon looks at the door of (y/n)'s apartment, "You're one hundred percent sure?"

"I'm two-hundred percent sure. I'd put money down that if you knock on that door right now and ask her to dinner on Friday, she'd say yes."

Egon looks back at his friends. He studies their faces, making sure there's no hint of humor. When he's satisfied that they're genuine and not trying to make a fool of him, he speaks, "Ray, what do you think?"

Peter leans over Egon's shoulder, knocking three times on the door. "See you later, Spengs." Peter pulls Ray with him down the hall. 

"Sorry, Egon!" Ray grins at him before the two disappear around a bend in the hall.

Egon looks back towards the door as it opens an inch. (y/n)'s face appears in the crack, "Egon? Did you forget something--"

"Can I come in?"

(y/n) stares for a beat before opening the door wider, letting him walk past her. He pauses in the entryway of her apartment, suddenly at a loss for words.

"Is there something I can do for you?" (y/n) asks.

He has little experience with this sort of thing but has watched both Ray and Peter hitting on women since college. He's never been as forward as his friends, preferring to stay in the shadows to observe these mating rituals. Peter was too forward, women never seemed to enjoy the way he got in their faces, flirting shamelessly, and Ray-- well, he had a natural charm about him that most women liked.

Egon didn't have a natural charm nor the attitude to be forward with women. Whenever he had tried, it had come out blunt, and women didn't seem to like blunt.

"Egon? Is something wrong?" He supposes he's been quiet for a beat too long as she tilts her head in concern.

"I'm fine."

"Oh... did you forget something?"

Here goes nothing, he supposes, "I-- Would you want to get dinner with me this Friday?"

(y/n) stills, "Are you asking me out, or does this have to do with the... ghosts in my apartment."

The ghosts. There were no ghosts in this apartment. Both of them knew that. "The former."

(y/n) blinks a few times, looking like she can't believe this is happening, "Does seven work?"

"Seven works for me."

I'm sure I'd run aground with their trademark lawyers, but I want to make an alumni hoodie for Columbia University's Department of Parapsychology, the fictional department the Ghostbusters worked at before they were fired and started business.

I can already picture the big block jersey letters, Est. MCMLXXXIV, with the Latin motto rumpens me sentire bonum.

Bustin makes me feel good.
