Expresso Bongo (1959 Film)
This British comedy/drama is probably best known as Cliff Richard’s first film. Cliff makes a promising debut as a talented, but naive, singer and performs a few songs along the way. It is, however, mainly a satire on the entertainment industry.
The starring role goes to the always excellent Laurence Harvey as Johnny Jackson, an entrepreneur who makes Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses look honest. Yolande Donlan is equally excellent as experienced singer Dixie Collins and she dominates every scene in which she appears. Television personality Gilbert Harding makes a cameo appearance as himself. The satire is based on whom you can and cannot trust in the entertainment industry. It should be compulsory viewing for every aspiring professional entertainer.
Warning: some will be offended by what approaches “Page 3 nudity” in a small Soho nightclub, although the show there is intentionally bad. There is a little swearing: nothing very strong, but not for children. It was classified as an “A” when released, i.e. people under 16 could see it at the cinema only when accompanied by someone aged 16 or above.

Oi, oi, pin back your lugs for the next couplet of Ian Dury’s England’s Glory in our attempt to establish the quintessence of Englishness.

Building on loobyloo's post re: Roger Allam on Radio 4 Extra playing Gilbert Harding (the "rudest man in Britain" in the 1950s). The Gilbert Harding programme's on now. Radio 4 Extra's devoting 3 hours to him (7pm to 10pm). This 3 hour extravaganza culminates in a full repeat of a play about Harding with Roger Allam playing Harding. My guess is that this play will be an absolute joy and will be well worth catching either live tonight or on iplayer. I'm assuming the play's an hour and will start at 9pm, but that's a guess. This is what the writer of the play has to say: Between 7pm and 10pm, Radio 4 Extra is devoted to the life of Gilbert Harding, televsion's first ever "personality". It features extracts from his appearances as quizmaster and panellist on Round Britain Quiz, Twenty Questions and What's My Line? as well as the whole of his Face to Face interview with John Freeman. Accompanying interviews include one with Roger Storey, his secretary, and one with me. The programme ends with a repeat of my Afternoon Drama about Gilbert Harding, Dr Brighton and Mr Harding, directed by Martin Jenkins with Roger Allam as Harding. The programme will also be available on the BBC's iPlayer.
Roger Allam on Radio 4 extra at 9am on Saturday 11th January repeated at 7pm
"To create a profile of Gilbert Harding's life and sample his broadcasting work Simon Fanshawe will draw on Stephen Wyatt's play Dr Brighton and Mr Harding, in which Harding (played by Roger Allam) wrestles with his inner demons and fantasies, knowing also that he is in increasingly poor health"
Got to be worth a listen :0)
