A few years ago, a shy Compton (Calif.) high school student used to visit our offices in Hollywood several times a month. It was quite a length excursion each time, involving three bus transfers en route. But this lad was built of iron determination. He wanted to be a professional singer and songwriter and he knew it would take time, patience and training. And he was willing to work hard with us. Finally, in early 1967, after much preparation, we decided to record Brenton Wood for Double-Shot Records, a swinging new label. Although Brenton had been influenced by Sam Cooke and Jesse Belvin, we advised him to be his natural self…to create his own bag of soul. The happy result was “The Oogum Boogum Song,” a phenomenal seller. Subsequently tagged by fans as “The Oogum Boogum Man,” Brenton displayed his versatility with an even bigger follow-up smash, “Gimme Little Sign.” And when he made it three giant hits in a row with “Baby You Got It,” there were no longer any doubts that B.W. had arrived as an important hit-maker in today’s pop market. As his record producers, we’re especially proud of his fame. But we’re even happier for the track athlete-turned-singer because he still has the same wonderful attitude toward the business as when we first met – the serious and intense desire to perform, to study, to improve and, above all, to please you, the listener.
