My beauty routine headcanons for the Gintaladies 💅🏻💄

I have a passion for beauty so I thought I would upload these fun headcanons on Tumblr! I wrote this list a few years ago on my Twitter account but still wanted to share these with the girly girls in this fandom 😊

Kagura - is very excited when Tae buys her something cheap like a clear lip gloss from Daiso. Living in a house full of smelly boys, she wants to feel a little bit more grown up (especially to look like her mother someday), so whenever she gets the rare opportunity to do things like wearing sheet masks or put on lipstick, she feels very happy. Sometimes Gintoki makes fun of her whenever she does these things, which makes her self-conscious, but it doesn't stop her from enjoying it.

Otose - Her standard blue eyeshadow and red lipstick is not for her to feel beautiful, but to make sure that people can see her. As she ages, she sometimes feels like she is becoming more invisible, so her war paint is there to remind others that she is still a formidable woman. As a former beauty, she doesn't mind her lines and enjoys smoking too much to give it up even if it's bad for her skin. She gets a manicure every two to three weeks, requesting the same color of red nail polish that she's been wearing for the last twenty years.

Catherine - used to be a beautiful Amanto probably twenty or thirty years ago but over time, age eventually caught up with her, and now she is content to remain the way she is with very little alterations. (Her confidence is unshakeable.) She washes her face with a basic cleanser every day and is done with the rest of her beauty routine after that - nothing more, nothing less. She also gets a cheap haircut every two to three months because it's lower maintenance, compared to having long hair.

Tama - Sometimes reads beauty blogs and watches YouTube tutorials on the internet out of natural curiosity, but still doesn't understand why anyone would care as she always wakes up flawless with nary a blemish on her complexion. I mean, she's a robot.

Tae - She wears medium to full coverage makeup for work, but she diligently washes it off with a cleansing balm or cleansing oil after her evening shift at Snack Smile is over. She prefers to be fresh-faced outside of her job, and probably would be conscientious of not being in the sun too often. She is very practical when it comes to maintaining her looks, and practices a basic but solid skincare routine such as cleansing, moisturizing, using essence/toner, and applying sunscreen before going outside.

Tsukuyo - Canonically has a vanity table in her bedroom with various lotions and potions on top of it. She can do a basic makeup for special occasions (such as applying powder foundation with a sponge and a slick of mascara), but generally, she does not enjoy it as she feels self-conscious whenever she puts it on. Hinowa has successfully gotten her to adopt a very basic skincare routine but in general, she does the bare minimum as she doesn't have any patience for such things.

Sacchan - is quite vain about her hair, and probably a bit of a hair care snob. However, when she goes inside a cosmetics shop, she is probably a little intimidated by how much selection there is on the shelves and exits it ASAP. Whenever she remembers to book her appointments, she gets a straightening perm at the hair salon (to make her hair look even straighter).

Kyuubei - washes their face with traditional Japanese charcoal soap and water, but still has poreless skin despite not having any complicated skincare routine. Their favorite bathing products are cypress (hinoki) scented.

Mutsu - As a harried accountant and boss b!tch always hustling 24/7 in space, she doesn't have any time for a beauty routine; she only scrubs her face with a washcloth and warm water in the morning just to wake her up. However, she is religious about booking a massage every two weeks to help with stress relief and enjoys the sensation of a jade roller / gua sha on her face every now and then. It keeps her from murdering Sakamoto on a regular basis.

Nobume - had no idea what a skincare routine was until she had her first sleepover with Soyo-hime and Kagura at the royal palace. The two of them ask if they can do a makeover on her, and she agreed (even though she knows she will regret it). She likes donut-scented body lotions and keeps a bottle of it at work to use as a hand cream.

Soyo-hime - Has beautiful skin and is naturally quite pretty, but as she is photographed / interviewed quite often as the Prime Minister of Edo, the princess is aware that she needs to look presentable to the public at all times. She uses traditional Japanese beauty products such as camellia oil for her hair to keep it long and glossy. She learned how to do a deceptively complicated "no makeup" makeup look, especially when doing a press conference. She also drinks lots of matcha / green tea and eats high quality + organic food on a regular basis for the health benefits.

Wakikaoru - has a ten step skincare routine, refuses to go out in public without lipstick, and always curls her eyelashes before stepping out of her house, even if it's to take out an assassination target. She is a high maintenance girly who uses SK-II skincare products and her shower is always stocked with rose scented hair products. Magenta is her signature color and you can see it in the color of her hair, nails, and go-to lipstick.

Matako - is bold and fun, aware that she is a good looking girl. Though she is brash she's not afraid to put on pink lipstick, a little bit of mascara, and khol eyeliner at a Kiheitai party whenever they're celebrating pulling off a successful terrorist attack. She embraces her femininity and will punch some dudebro's face if they ever make fun of her for it. Still, she likes the idea of skincare more than actually doing it.

Otsuu - As a pop star, she generally has a whole team of makeup artists and stylists who are there to help her look as pretty as possible. She enjoys the process and is good friends with them. She prefers to look fresh and bubbly, opting more for the cute and "the girl next door" rather than to look sexy / hot. She gets a facial at a private, expensive spa twice a month and regularly models for trendy clothing and makeup brands. If she doesn't have a makeup artist on hand, she will carry a cosmetic bag full of drugstore makeup and tried and true products; these are things she used to use back when she was singing on the streets for spare change.

Ketsuno Ana - Her skincare cabinet is full of pricey products but she knows what works for her and doesn't deviate from it once she likes something. She only uses high-end / luxury makeup brands like Clé de Peau, Chantecaille, and Koh Gen Doh. She is a conservative beauty and prefers to enhance her features rather than to hide them with a mask.

Mitsuba - Even though she was poor at one point in her life, she enjoyed soaking for hours in the bathtub, using bath salts to improve her circulation troubles and muscle aches. When Sougo was able to send more money home later on, her one indulgence was to buy good quality soaps from the Bushu market, especially the traditional Japanese made ones that had natural ingredients such as charcoal, cypress oil, persimmon/yuzu fragrances, plum blossom scents, ect. Her beauty routine was very simple and inexpensive; she liked to use camellia oil on her hair and rice water as a toner. Whenever Mitsuba forgot to bring her parasol while taking walks with Sougo on a sunny day, her freckles would inevitably turn darker over the bridge of her nose. Back when they were teenagers, Hijikata thought she looked prettier when her freckles were more prominent.

Gedoumaru - regularly bathes in the blood of her victims in a monthly Satanic ritual every lunar full moon to keep her looking young (she is extremely goth and vampire-coded)

Ladies of the Sun and their Guardians. Reason one million why Sorachi-sensei is supreme at writing female characters. Showcasing women who rule and women who protect. I loved how in the ending, he unashamedly had two women lead the country to its future. (And this is set in patriarchal feudal-era Edo! Which proves that the excuse of not being more inclusive in writing because it wouldn’t be era-appropriate or historically accurate is not viable at all.)

It’s not just Edo, but also Yoshiwara. Both powerful territories were led by men but rulership passed on to women. I’ll probably expound on this in the future, but it’s amazing to me how Sorachi’s female characters aren’t just BAMFs, but are shown to be leaders and rulers. As much as I love FMA, in Gintama, Sorachi makes females leading the norm and not just an exception. 

Three Fourths of the Four Devas are women. Otose is the undisputed leader and pillar of Kabuki-cho. Sarutobi becomes the eventual boss of the Oniwabanshu. Kyuubei leads the Yagyuu family. Tae was already a leader of Snack Smile, but I think eventually becomes a leader of Kabuki-cho. Asaemon becomes the head of her family. Mutsu is the Vice-Captain, but logistics wise, the Kaientei take her orders equally to Tatsuma. We already have amazing female mangaka who write great male characters e.g. Hiromu Arakawa, but Sorachi proves that male mangakas can also write brilliant, intriguing, and complex women. For this reason, and more, Gintama will always remain close to my heart.

Diamond Perfume & Wonder Girls

So, I associate several songs and bands (of all languages and genres) with Diamond Perfume aside from Perfume. Bands like FAKY and Miss A, and some songs, for example:

“I’m Not Yours” by Jolin Tsai ft. Namie Amuro

“Rule" by Ayumi Hamasaki (Sacchan would totally rock the music video for this song)

“Independent Women, Pt 1” by Destiny’s Child

“Bad Reputation” by Joan Jett (random, but it makes me think of them)

But today I was listening to my favourite Wonder Girls songs (also one of my favourite girl groups of all time, been a fan of them since 2010), and I realized that for their rock band concept with only four members – beginning with the Reboot album up until their disbandment – would totally suit Diamond Perfume!

We’ve got:

Tsukuyo and Sunmi on bass.

Kyuubei and Hyerim on electric guitar.

Sacchan and Yubin on drums.

Tae and Yeeun on piano – the last one that fits, even though Tae uses castanets.

If we also factor in the original 5-member line-up (just the number alone; in case you’re new to K-pop, there’s a whole history with Hyuna and Sunmi being among the original WG members before Yubin and Lim joined at different eras), then I thought Mitsuba of being an honorary member of Diamond Perfume. I did consider Kagura, of course, but I see her being in another line-up.

Anyway, this post is just me appreciating Diamond Perfume and Wonder Girls together! And I’m also wondering if there are any fellow Gintama fans who are also fans of WG (I only know of one other).
