Giraffe centaur, trying to get a coin from underneath a vending machine: my best.

So, yesterday, I was chilling, partaking in my online tute, when I had this thought. I wanted to see a size comparison between your generic horse centaur and a Giraffe centaur. But of course, I didn't even know how the scale of a horse centaur (or... just a horse), let alone a Giraffe (or how to draw either). Thus, human and horse centaur scale, where in a horse centaur is generally taller than a horse, bc a horses neck isn't going to sit as high as a human torso sitting upright on a horse...?

Also, I looked up the etymology of "centaur" and it doesn't reference horses specifically, so basically anything could be a centaur so long as it has 4 legs (at least), 2 arms, and a humanoid torso. So have fun with that.

My cousin asks me to design a giraffe centaur. Here’s the answer I did to her prompt in the car ride from Louisiana back to Texas:

“I think they’d have like a human torso perched on top of a giraffes body but it would be a regular sized torso with a longer, thick human neck. It would also have more giraffe features in the face like longer teeth and tongue because they would still need to eat acacia leaves. The arms would be small and withered like a T. rex due to lack of need, and the skin on the human bodh would be thick and dark brownish-purple like a giraffe hide. It would also be pretty hairy due to need for sun protection. The human shoulders would be extra broad but also anchored to the lower back so the body would be super rounded and muscular to support the weight of the neck but also to keep the body from titling forwards when it runs and falling over. It wouldn’t be able to run as fast as a regular giraffe, or as strong, and it wouldn’t be able to see/hear/think as well because the brain would be smaller due to a thick giraffe skull and too much weight on the end of a neck. It also wouldn’t be able to turn its neck and would be in line with the spine and the rib cage would extend upwards, keeping the shoulders palsied and the neck supported”

I keep thinking about hyenas to gnolls and then of course other animals like.... zebras to centaur.... wildebeest to minotaur...... but what the hell would a giraffe be??? This is important. I love giraffes. Please solve my problems. 😰

Hehe, this did make me chuckle. 

I think part of the problem is the ‘watering down’ of the connection. Hyena and gnolls appear to be very similar, with only a few things (more hand-like fore-paws and an upright posture), while zebra and wildebeest are very similar to the ‘animal’ halves of the traditional taurs we associate with them. Giraffes are a bit harder… You run the risk of ending up with a ridiculous monster… (tiny human bit stuck on a giraffe body? MASSIVE human torso on normal giraffe…) However, I’m gonna go for the taur equivalent of a giant or just a larger person, and just scale up the human body a bit…

And with my centaur Iskandar (based on a heavy horse) for scale. He features in orc boy Khuruz’ story if you’re interested. 

So yeah. My take on giraffes in the taur/non-human world. Please feel free to chime in with other/better suggestions!! Or draw a better version of the giraffe-taur-person…
