Considering viruses can transmit code of genes from themselves onto their host, and with recent findings of “giant viruses” (girus), I wonder if this cannot help but explain some strange instances in evolutionary history were different animal lineages evolve to have similar traits at the same time (sails in synapids and amphibians, upright walking in crocodylomorphs and dinosaurs etc) could have some more interesting complicated elements introduced with giruses being able to hijack cells, incorporate its own genetic material onto the cell, and all the other crazy stuff it can do.

I’ve wondered about this virus idea for some time, but now it’s even more interesting with giruses.
