So this is part of my TJLau, the au where the Justice League forms as teens! This one is Barry centric, where I’m playing with the speedforce being- I guess more sentient? Or reactive? And Barry is young and having a really hard time dealing with the side affects that are being caused by SPOILER!

Barry sat up and looked around. The only thing he could see for miles was sand and a cactus or two. This- this wasn’t Missouri. But how did he- where did-
Barry was scared. There was something wrong with him, more wrong than usual. His feet were smoking, his shoes melted, and he was no where near home. He broke down sobbing in the sand, missing his mom and his dad and not being alone. He missed when life was happy and he didn’t have to worry, and now all he did was stress out. He was gonna die out here.
He probably would’ve just sat there and cried until he died but then he heard it. He screamed and leapt to his feet, taking several steps away from the snake, before realizing he went farther than he meant to. Quickly too.
In the back of his mind, he had put the clues together to know how he got here, but it had finally clicked in that moment:. He had superspeed, like his favorite superhero ever, the Flash. Barry stared down at his feet in shock, but it made sense. He out ran his bullies and was in a completely different place, his shoes melted from the friction.

Ik Kelli is now on Young Justice in current continuity, but my YJ is based off of YJ98 and I didn’t want Kelli to be stuffed in because she deserves her own time to shine! So I made another Titans subcategory NCT style made up of Connor Hawke, Jackson Hyde, Joey Wilson, M’gann, Jaime Reyes and Kelli! I promise it makes sense in world.
There’s The Titans as a whole, and then subgroups Titans A, Titans B, and Titans West
YJ is its own separate group but falls under the young hero’s umbrella
-xx23 just means 23 years ago. Didn’t want to be too confusing and put in the actual year in the au that would be (this story takes place in year xxx2, and Kyle’s birth year is -xx21. Year 0, my anchor point, is the year Superman dies)
Bruce 100% knew Kyle’s age because he totally did research on him the second they met. He was a bit paranoid after Parallax, ofc he was gonna make sure Kyle wasn’t a threat. He’s interested bc he wants to see if today is the day everyone found out
Dick finds out Kyle’s age after Kyle shares his secret identity with Dick and the other Titans. Bruce did offer Dick his research since Dick was working with Kyle at that time (which you will see in T7) but Dick declined out of respect for Kyle’s secret Id at the time, but after knowing it he did read up on Kyle. Kyle doesn’t know Dick knew, and Dick is worried because he would rather Kyle tell ppl on his own accord but him stepping in would still make it suspicious
Yes Wally and Kyle got into a fist fight in the Hall of Justice. Ur welcome
Please know I have written down everyone’s canon birthdays and gave some to people who didn’t have one canonically. Same with middle names. I’m a mess Ikik but I love world building like this

Both Guy and Hal know Kyle’s actual age as mentioned in FaWF and the ask that led to this story being shared. I do wanna share how they found out, but I’m unsure if I will or really how to bc it adapts something that’s kind of from canon that is dark/angsty?? But my wonderfully amazing awesome beta reader did encourage me to share it so I think I will! Plus the people love Kyle angst and Kyle hurt/comfort
The plan I have for that fic is three separate storylines that like overlap? Smth with John and Guy, smth with Jess and Simon, and smth with Hal and Kyle (where Hal finds out) with an epilogue where Guy finds out?
Pls note that in Hal’s thing he is going to Gotham. I wanna play with the stupid fanon thing where Batman is like gr get out of Gotham but instead of Hal giving up and leaving, he goes in anyways and the two are forced to work on the case together and kinda start to respect each other after the whole Parallax thing? They ask his real age despite the year Kyle gives bc they don’t trust him to have given the right year. They think he made a fake year to go with his same agar and just calculated it wrong
Donna is worried that he was younger younger when they started dating but no it’s okay!
She does get teased after this for a while tho bc Kyle actually 2 years younger instead of 1

Once again to reiterate! It’s not like Kyle is “in trouble” with any of the Lanterns. He is an adult and was an adult when he was doing this. They are more teasing him, and kind of not mad but like “bro wtf” that he didn’t share his real age before then.

So I really started yapping when answering this question, so I put it below the cut. Hahahhaahah i might really like my worldbuilding a bit tooooo much. But you, the person who is reading this, should totally read the whole thing. Pls. My au is canon adjacent i swear you'll like it-
But i understand ppl are busy and some people only like canon! That's okay, i summarized my answer at the very end! ANYWAYS ONTO THE ANSWER-
Yep, Kyle did lie to Hal when he said he was 21 and hasn't told anyone his actual age for a couple of reasons!
So i know his age hasn't ever been like, specifically stated in canon as far as I know, so when he's first introduced in canon my guestimate for his age is 23ish? In my au, when he first gets the ring he's 20 (he actually gets the ring on his 20th birthday hehehe) and Fear and What Follows takes place 3 months after that in November! And he's a bit younger than what I belive is canon simply due to timeline constraints bc I needed him to be a Green Lantern for at least a year before the Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen arcs in my au, with ofc enough room to flesh out his backstory and get him set in the world!
Now as to why he's saying he's a year older than what he actually is!
One) He did mention that he got his ring in the alleyway in the back of a bar, or rather he was forced to say that! He didn't know how the Justice League would feel about knowing that he had a fake id and was drinking underaged (the League was already pissed off at him as it was) so he gave his age as America's legal drinking age.
((Oligatory note that im not endorsing or condemming underaged drinking. I'm not telling anyone to do anything, we are talking about GDCU Kyle being a LIAR-))
Two) In my au you have to be 21 to join the Justice League.
In my au just becuase you work with the JL, doesn't mean your part of the JL, it means you're part of the Justice League data base. So like the Titans, and people like Kara, Cass, Plastic man, and Tim (YJ doesn't exist yet) are part of the League Database, not the Justice League the team. The current JL members at this point are Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash (Barry), Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern (Hal), Green Arrow (Ollie), and Black Canary. And this has been the JL since it has started like 10 years before Kyle became GL..
((Exception being the rotating Lantern Chair but thats for another post/ask))
But when Kyle becomes GL, Barry is gone and Wally has taken on the mantle, and ofc Hal and the whole Parallax thing. So the League decides even though they don't really want to, to give Kyle the Green Lantern seat. This makes Kyle the first person to be added to the JL since Ollie and Dinah were shortly after the JL formed. And ofc, they ask him how old he is and becuase of the this and reason 1 as well as the next reasons, he says 21.
Two point Two) To make Wally mad.
As I said in point two, you need to be 21 to join the League. Wally and Kyle are the same age in my au, with Wally being born in January and Kyle being born in August of the same year, makeing Wally also 20 during Fear and What Follows. The League have known Wally since he was 11, they know he's not old enough to join the JL. So while he's operating as The Flash and works with the JL, hes not an offical member of the team. And Kyle has the oppurunity to be.
So Kyle saying he's 21 lets him be on the League and therefore pisses Wally off becuase he's not. And Wally has doing this superhero thing for almost a decade, hes worked hard to prove himself and is still working hard to feel worthy of the Flash mantle. But this new GL just WALKS IN with less than a month of training and is given a spot on THE JUSTICE LEAGUE???? He's pissed OFFFFFF.
Plus around this time, Wally and the rest of Fab 5 are dealing with the League not really taking them seriously becuase compared to other younger heroes, the League has known them since they were small children and kinda still view them like that. And with Jason's death happening earlier that year and the personal tragedys that each Fab 5 member are dealing with that year- yeah. Wally is pissed off and Kyle is DELIGHTED about it.
Kyle didn't start the battle but he's gonna fight back-
Three) Kyle hasn't shared his secret id with any superhero.
No one knows his face behind the mask, no one knows his name, no one knows anything about him really. And Kyle wants to keep it that way.
So (quick bullet points) timeline wise in my Au:
Kyle becomes Gl
Alex dies
Kyle fights Parallax Hal and imprisions him in the sciencells on a destoyed and desolate Oa
Kyle gets a seat on the JL
This all happens in the month of August. He's a wee bit traumatized.
The only person who knew his secret id dies horribly (and 2 months later his mom who also knew dies too which makes him more firm in his decision). That and the fact that the JL is a bit hostile to him when they first meet him makes him keep his id a secret. In his mind, giving the incorrect age can throw them off his scent!
((Note, the League being a bit hostile towards Kyle isn't an uwu Kyle moment or anything, but the League not knowing what to do with this new GL. Their last one "went insane", recently, they need to be cautious))
((Bruce's paranoid ass knows that he's Kyle Rayner, but he respects not giving out Kyle's id bc Bruce and the rest of current batfam (Babs, Cass, Dick, Tim) haven't given out their secret ids. If Kyle proved to be evil or something tho Bruce would share))
Even though Kyle does share his name and face in the sequal fic to Fear and What Follows, a fic going by the code name T7 for right now, he actually doesnt share his real age until like, threeish years later! By accident! I wrote a silly little thing about it if anyone wants me to post it. Bc i will. It's fun.

Pls know that Sora, Sodam, Tu, and Kyle did confirm with eachother if they were the legal drinking age on their planet and Kyle said yes. Bc he is legal on his planet. Just not his country. But like hes half mexican and half Irish, and the legal drinking age in both countries is 18 guys-
((Sora and Tu are a year older than Kyle (21 in Earth years) and Sodam is 2 years older (22 in Earth years) if anyone was curious))

Kyle is 20, not 21. He lies about it to everyone because

So it’s been a second friends! Sorry I’ve been gone so long, but I am here with positive updates.
Of Fear and Falling Apart has three chapters left, 16, 17, and 18. I had to replan 17 and 18, but I am happy to say that all three of these chapters have been written and edited. They are ready to post, this fic will be finished.
I have been writing a lot since I’ve been gone! I’ve actually done a couple of Whumptober prompts, and while all of them can’t be shared with you (there’s some spoilers for my AU in some, and others. I’m not sure yet), one of them I’m thinking is gonna get two more chapters and be posted on AO3 as a prequel to Fear and What Follows.
The next Green Lantern fic for my AU is currently being planned out! And I’m very excited for this one (sorry Kyle lol), but I gotta do some reading/rereading for it heheheh. It will round out the little trilogy that FAWF started.
But also. I do have a Young Justice fic (1998 comic version) for this AU in the works!!! It’s over 100k words at the moment and I’m finishing up the third arc, so it’s almost done too 👀

Notes for the second chapter of my Green Lantern fic Fear and What Follows: Fear Overtakes I'm Loseing My Grip. This has some worldbuilding notes and GL headcannons i included in my fic as well as thoughts about the chapter so you dont need to read the fic to read and enjoy this.
So I think the stupid skunk streak they put in Kyle’s hair as Parallax is dumb and my boy deserves to look good always so he gets white money pieces while possessed as Parallax. I don’t make the rules I just make the rules-
The layers of Parallax’s voice with Kyle’s terrified voice being the undertone is me trying to be cool with character design tbh
Firm believer in Hal‘a hair going a bit white prematurely and Parallax making it worse. He dyes his hair in an attempt to keep his youth and coolness guys
Because he restarted the corps and kept the Torch burning, I firmly believe that most of the rest of the Corps put Kyle on this pedestal that Kyle doesn’t think he deserves to be on. To him, he’s just a guy that stumbled upon the right answer
Hal also kind of puts him on a pedestal with this belief that Kyle is like? Pure good? If that makes sense? Again. Unreliable narrator
I never understood why sometimes the ring will be out of power and the Lanterns keep their suits and abilities to breathe in space???? And sometimes they lose the suits? They loose them in my au sorry guys. Remember to wear clothes under ur suits Lanterns (Why are there so many panels of GL’s with barely any clothes on? You think they would remember by now-)
No one cares to know, but once again I think this fear stuff should be worse. In canon Guy gets visions of his dead Gf and John Xanshi, but I think Guy would also see his childhood and John Katma’s death. Twist the fears, make them suffer. Sinestro doesn’t care-

Did I give large amount of different parts of the emotional spectrum different feelings? Yes I did-
Green is kinda spicy? Like the way that spice can feel in your mouth? And it gives you a rush of adrenaline in a good way! Hearts racing, you feel energized and ready to go, your body is not tense and ready to fight! It’s great it’s fun!
Yellow feels like a panic attack basically! Hard to breathe, hard to move. It also feels cold, you get chills, and it tastes sour
Also this is the effects of those colors on GLs. It would affect different color Users differently based on their colors. If someone asks me to elaborate I will, I love to yap
The correct name for the Yellow Lanterns is the Sinestro Corps, but Hal thinks it’s stupid so refers to them as Yellow Lanterns

He’s also very sassy, but you don’t get to see that until chapter like, four of Fear and What Follows! He’s my sweet boy but he’s also a badass, and I absolutely love to show his kindness and ability to see the good in people as a strength, which it usually wouldn’t be seen as in a military or super masculine settings? My beta reader has wholeheartedly endorsed that I write it, but that one would be angst and hurt/comfort. But hey, I feel like we like Kyle whump? And the story line I wanna kinda adapt/im taking inspiration from is kinda cannon?
I might do it ngl I'm easily persuaded because it has something I really wanna play with, which is the fanon thing where Hal tries to go Gotham but Bruce is like No! Get Out! You can't be here! But instead of Hal being like aw man like he's Swiper and Bruce is Dora he's like no this is my jurisdiction bro this is important to me and goes in anyways. And they work the case together and regain that respect they had for one another before Parallax.

I just had a thought that another nickname that Captain Crybaby could have given to Kyle was Mistofolees (like the character from the Cats Musical) because in the Musical Mistofolees is the one who brings the cats' leader back and Kyle was the one who brings the corps back

My Hal might not know the reference on his own, but he likes to learn about his neices and nephews interests so he can talk to them about it, especially when they were younger so maybe he learned through one of them (we can blame Helen)!
I'm gonna add this to my Kyle nicnames list tbh. For those of you that don't know, in my fic Fear and What Follows, I mention that each Earth Green Lantern has a nickname because if multiple of them are on the same mission they can't all go by Green Lantern and useing their names would reveal their identites and i do NOT like how DC handles secret identies (WHY ARE THEY YELLING EAROTHERS NAMES IN THE STREETS????). It also based off of military nicknames, which you usually get for silly reasons.
Other names I was thinking of for Kyle's nickname were
Colors
because he's an artist! would've been given to him by Dinah while he is on the League instead of Hal and just something that everyone calls him before the id reveal, and is also a cool nod to him becoming a White Lantern later!
Pretty Boy
bc he's a pretty boy! not much to say here!
Rat
he's my rat guys. and alley and his ring and- didn't end up useing it because Sinestro calls him ally rat.
Gromit
my friends idea! Bc he fights with Wally a lot (before they become friends ofc) and Wally is Wallace so Kyle gets to be Gromit. He's gonna be jokingly called this in my au but its not like an official nickname
Four
the fourth green lantern! Originally in my au they were gonna be differentiated by number but the nicknames are cooler and sillier
Spaceboy
he was gonna get this one from Donna and it would just kinda stick.
Trouble
This was the top contender because he is a trouble magnet! Went with Torchie in the end, but i got to use Trouble in a different Au so im happy bc I really like this one!
Guy was gonna be Souless (because he's a red head) before I went with One Hit and Hal was almost Highball (his airforce call sign) or Captian Weepy (the double C sounded better so I changed it), but everyone else I went with the first thoughts cz i did like them (Braincell for Jess, Vroom for Simon, Teeny Bopper/Teeny for Keli) but John it took me a long time to come up with Problem Child/pc. Still trying to think of Jo's (I rlly have to read far sector i'm a failure).
