GITLO (Gay In The Life Of)

To provide complete anonymity, I will be giving my roommates numbers in order to distinguish their identities. 

Okay, so basically this is a rant about roommate #2. He's an 18 years-old, brand new, out of the womb 1st year student, (who coincidentally does a lot of nothing a lot of the time except for smoke pot). (Disclaimer: I have nothing against smoking the doobie, I am actually all for it. But like with everything in life, self-control is key. If you can't moderate or monitor yourself and how much you smoke or drink or whatever, you lose control over your faculties; which is a no-no in my opinion.) 

Needless to say, he likes to spend a lot of his time high, and by "a lot" I mean essentially any opportunity that he can salvage to be "lighting up," he's basically already seized that opportunity to get sky high. 

(Okay tbh that's really not the point of this rant, but I figured since I was going to let off a little steam, why not just run through all the bases real quick first, right?)

So recently I wanted to buy a pet. Unfortunately my apartment doesn't allow animals like cats or dogs, so I figured why not just get something a little smaller, and perhaps something low maintenance and easy to take care of? I thought bunny at first, because I think bunnies are fucking adorable, but I heard they can be extremely odorous, and I'd most likely have to keep it in my room, (which was basically a no in my book). So then I was throwing a couple of ideas around as to what I was thinking about getting. I think hamsters and gerbils are cute, but I want to have a pet that I can like interact with, and I feel like there's only so much you can do with a pet like a hamster (putting it in a ball, watching it run on a wheel, etc). 

So then I thought; chinchilla. Chinchillas are the planets most adorable animals ever, and if you've never heard of one or don't know what it looks like, please look up a video of a chinchilla bathing and you can thank me later. 

But, there were a few red flags that popped up before I went all impulsive and bought one on the spot. First, the price. I wasn't totally aware that chinchillas can range from $100 to an upwards of +$150 depending on the breed or where you buy it, so that was kind of a bummer to start off with. And secondly, given that chinchillas are very delicate creatures during early development, it's hard to gauge how healthy or well off an adult chinchilla is usually before it's too late. That's where the second issue came around. Because if I was serious about wanting a chinchilla, I wouldn't just stop by wherever and pick one all willy-nilly. I'd be smart about it and go to an actual breeder who knows their shit. 

So that was the deal with getting a pet. (Basically, I decided now was not the time to get a chinchilla). 

Here's where roommate #2 finally comes into play. So, being the very home-body that he is, a few times here and there he complains that there's nothing for him to do here (because this is first year in a new area, new school, etc) and he doesn't have very many friends to hang out with. I think he uses the apartment as a scapegoat/excuse to stay in and do nothing, and then tell the rest of us that there's nothing to do and that he's bored and alone all day long, blah-blah-blah. 

So when I told him that I was thinking about getting a chinchilla, he became incredibly excited and was going on about how he was going to have a buddy to hangout with and apparently just have another living creature in the same room as he was while the rest of us were out. I'm totally okay with the idea of people taking care of/looking after my pets; except when roommate #2's idea of hanging out would most likely be getting blazed for hours on end and (with my wildest fears intact), most likely do something fucked up or harmful to my pet (if I ever had one that he wanted to "hangout" with). 

Sorry, but if I was going to be responsible for another pet (another living creature), I would not so graciously put it's life in the hands of someone who can hardly take care of themselves properly. 

And it's not that I don't get along with roommate #2. I think he's a great guy and very genuine. I respect him; I just don't think he's particularly responsible, and there is a very big difference between the two. 

This leads me to my second (and hopefully final) pet-peeve against roommate #2. With roommate #2's excessive smoking comes the added bonus of his excessive lazy/dirty behavior. It's hard enough as it is keeping an apartment clean with the majority of us being gone during most hours of the day, and a few times here and there during the nights (whether it be late classes, work, meetings, etc). But roommate #2 manages to do the impossible by consistently turning the apartment inside-out in a matter of days, sometimes even hours. 

Given the circumstances, one could imagine how these types of qualities can become aggravating and/or annoying. 

Anyways, I don't usually let my nuisances get the best of me, so I'm fairly adept to ignore the mess and the smoking most days of the week. (End rant). 

But now thinking back on getting a pet, I might consider getting a guinea pig, because I like their size and I've heard they're very social animals; which is something that I enjoy. :)
