EXTRA! EXTRA! YOU CAN’T HELP BUT FALL IN LOVE WITH CHEWING GUM! MY REVIEW ON EXTRA’S NEW CAMPAIGN ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS.

A couple of years ago, Extra Gum brought forth the marketing campaign entitled ‘The Story of Sarah & Juan’. It is a heartwarming tale of  high school sweethearts whose bond is created from sharing a piece of Extra gum. After the gum is shared between the two, Juan draws a picture on the wrapper to commemorate the moment. The couple argues while moving in together. Unfortunately, Sarah has to relocate for work and won’t be home with Juan for a while. Everyone knows when you love someone, having a long distance relationship puts a strain on the relationship. It takes a great deal of energy to keep the flame alive. Smiles, kisses, and hugs are exchanged between Sarah and Juan when she finally returns home.  Juan holds a very special marriage proposal involving the Extra gum wrappers, which have hand-drawn illustrations of each special moment they both shared. From the first encounter in high school, to their first kiss, to now, the marriage proposal.

I absolutely love this campaign because I am a hopeless romantic and it is beautiful to see this type of thing. What caught my attention about this ad was when I heard the song Extra used for the ad: Can’t Help Falling in Love, performed by Haley Reinhart. Her voice is soothing and has such an angelic tone to it. It captures the essence of the visuals used for the campaign very well. When Reinhart hits that high note, it’s pure bliss.

Overall, the commercial does a spectacular job in reminding the viewers of all the ups and downs of love, which is something most people have gone through at one point in their life.
