She volunteered, she ordered pizzas and had them delivered anonymously to the elderly people in her community, she chauffeured her friends and family to doctors’ appointments, she nursed them back to health. She taught me to give privately from my heart, seeking no applause or accolades. She was a woman who established her place in a man’s world, working at 16 years of age, long before it was socially acceptable for a woman to be strong, smart, capable.
