Finding out that some people are making the discourse on Neil Gaiman about everyone’s least favorite group, the Jews Zionists. Apparently that’s the thing to care about.
It’s…there’s something that’s scratching my brain about the fact that people are NOW throwing Gaiman under the Zionist Accusation Bus.
He’s…always been zionist. That’s been clear from minute one. He’s discussed his views on Israel’s right to self determination many times. And this blog supports Zionism but if you don’t, why are you just now turning on him for it? Why are we seeing this massive surge of people talking about that? I’ve never seen him brought up in discourse about Zionist creators before, but now we’re seeing it. Hell if you look through previous conversations with him you see a lot of very “pro-Palestine”(big quotes here!) folks going “I don’t think he’s a Zionist, he just doesn’t understand what’s happening!”
I feel like one of two things is happening here. Either you knew he held beliefs you disagree with and consider genocidal(wrongly but whatever), but because he made Good Omens and all your favorite content, you were willing to ignore it, which would make your argument a completely selfish, vain mockup of activism.
Or…maybe you just never bothered checking. You assumed he had to be a Good Jew™️ because when you picture a Zionist you picture a mustache twiddling vaudeville antagonist, cackling while they torture Palestinian babies, instead of a normal, productive member of your community. And then once he turned out to ACTUALLY be a monster, you went “oh I bet he’s actually Bad Jew!!!” Which would mean that you are wrong about how Zionism looks, acts and is, and also that your first instinct when a Jew does something evil is to see if they’re a Zionist to support your worldview.
Did anyone go dig up Johnny Depp or Amber Heard’s views on Palestine during that debacle? Do we see people scrutinizing other predators’ political views when they are white/goyim?
Or do we just apply this weird logic to Jews?
And I’m not saying “Leave Neil Gaiman alone!” He deserves the shitstorm of vitriol that he is getting from his ex-fans, he deserves to watch all the love and support and trust he had crumble away. I hope it burns. But it has nothing to do with him being a Jew, or a Zionist, and it’s creepy that some of you are excited for another opportunity to point at a Zionist Jew and go “see?????”
I talked to the rabbi today. (ok she talked to me and my friend, but STILL). After we started attending services this time last year, have (almost) witnessed an entire cycle of holidays and have become part of the community, she’ll sign us up for conversion classes in September. We’ll do the paperwork in May/June time and have some preliminary chats with her. And then classes start in September. There have been many times I resented that I needed 12 months attendance (for me now realistically 17) before starting classes in the Reform movement. Especially seeing people convert within that same timeframe, and me just still. waiting. But feeling this now, five months until classes is nothing. No one can take those twelve months away from me, and realistically both me and the community needed them. We had lots of people drop off after six months or so, which is why my community decided to implement the twelve month rule. There have been many evenings filled with longing for Torah and observance in my home. It’s been so worth it. I’m ready to study to become a part of bnei yisrael eventually. And I’m so excited for the rest of the journey.
I definitely need more practice but I’m not too mad about it. Been wearing mitpachot casually for a few weeks now and I feel more connected to my body spiritually than I think I ever have before.
Next paycheck I’m probably spending way too much at Wrapunzel.
It would be nice if I could find other transfem Jews and giyorot who wear mitpachot but if I have to be the representation i want in the world, oh well I guess I will.
Shavua Tov to everyone!
Hey, y’all. Remade my account since it has been so long. I was @tikvahhh and am gonna try to be more active here.
Intro- I’m Channa, your local giyoret waiting on the pandemic to kindly stop so I can reschedule my mikveh dip. I’m poly, queer, a mom to an absurd amount of pets and study religious studies at Uni. I’m 27, use she/her/they/them and play a lot of animal crossing when not working. I’m autistic among a few other things so just tell me what’s up.
New Jumblr™ Blog!
Hello! I am a prospective convert to Judaism who is currently converting through the Conservative movement, though I’m questioning switching to an Orthodox process (not sure where I theologically stand atm). I just made this blog because I would like to discuss Judaism and theology with fellow converts-in-progress and the Jewish peeps of Tumblr.
I love talking about G-d and halakha and Torah, and I will probably make a post about my conversion journey sometime soon.
Also, I would love to talk to Jewish people/prospective converts from any movement of Judaism, not just Conservative or Orthodox! I would like to make friends with everyone :)

Jewish conversion thoughts on the day:
If we are the universe observing itself, and G-d is the universe and also us, when we sing prayers is that G-d singing to himself? Is it like birds?
