A gjenganger is a type of ghost from Scandinavian folklore. They can return from death for several reasons, usually some traumatic event that prevents the soul from resting.

Both murder victims and the murderers themselves are said to be unable to rest after death, and can rise as gjengangere. Likewise, those who commit suicide often come back as a restless spirit. The symbol of the cross painted on one's headstone and carrying the coffin three times around the churchyard before burial are methods to prevent the creation of a gjenganger.

→ gjenganger was a revenant, an animated corpse. there were several reasons gjengangers would return from the afterlife; people who committed suicide, those who were murdered, or spirits who have left something undone. they were malicious and violent, coming back from the grave to torment their friends and family. ways to prevent them from coming back were carrying the coffin three times around the church, painting symbols (crosses), and crucifixes incantations.

Gjenganger.  

Hailing from Scandinavia, the gjenganger is a unique sort of ghost that is completely corporeal.  Usually the spirit of someone who left something undone in life, often gjenganger were murder victims, suicide victims, or murderers themselves.  Regardless of their demeanor in life, the gjenganger is always malicious, hurting the friends and family it once held dear.

Unlike most ghosts, the gjenganger can do more than simply frighten a person.  While possessing none of the traditional ghostly abilities, such as walking through walls or psychokinesis, the gjenganger instead spreads plague and disease.  The evil ghost will pinch someone, known as dødningeknip, and the victim’s skin will turn bluish as the spirit’s infection begins.  The flesh becomes necrotic, shriveling and dying, slowly working its way to the heart where it kills the victim.  This is usually done while the victim is asleep, leaving them helpless against the creature.
