Let’s Play Ball [HC #61]

Author’s Note: AU where there is no hostility between the Sharks and the Jets. Everyone gets along.

Back in high school, Anybodys really wanted to play baseball. However, the coach would not let him join the boys team. Despite making complaints to the dean and principal who agreed with the coach and said maybe Anybodys should join the girls’ softball team.

Annoyed, Bernardo and Riff decided to do something about it. If Anybody wanted to play baseball, they would start playing ball at the park. Bernardo’s team was called The Sharks and Riff’s was The Jets. They played a game every Sunday during the Spring and Fall.

Anybodys was the Jets’ strongest pitcher.

The games continued into adulthood when they all got jobs and started having families. Graziella and Anita designed the uniforms for their respective teams. the Jets were blue and the Sharks red. It quickly became a community wide event.

Doc and Valentina always made a bet over which team would win. Doc rooted for the Jets and Valentina for the Sharks.

Even Krupke would occasionally umpire for the games and he’d bring his kids. Gladhand would use the games as a way to fundraise for the high school.

During the game, Anita, Maria, Graziella and Velma would give out water, hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn and cotton candy to the people watching the game. Once a month they’d make little goodie bags for the kids who came to the game.

There was never any prize for whatever team won each week. It was just a fun way for everyone to blow off steam. After every game they’d all go to Doc’s store and order pizza.
