Artesana’s Sustainability Efforts in Packaging
by Daniel Donici
If you’ve ever picked up a bottle of Artesana milk or a jar of our yogurt, you’ve likely noticed something different right away—it’s in glass.
Not plastic. Not a plastic-coated carton. Real, solid, reusable glass.
That decision wasn’t based on a trend or a branding exercise. It came from a place of responsibility. At Artesana, we believe that how we package our food matters just as much as how we make it. Because once our milk or Sana leaves our facility, its journey doesn’t end. It continues—into your home, and eventually, back into the environment.
And that’s where our packaging philosophy begins: with the full picture.
Why Glass?
When we first started Artesana back in 2012, we made a bold (and honestly risky) choice: to use glass packaging across our core dairy products. It was more expensive. It required more complex logistics. But it felt right.
Here’s why we’re still committed to glass today:
1. Preserves taste and quality
Glass doesn’t interact with the product. It keeps flavors pure, textures consistent, and live cultures active. Milk in glass simply tastes better.
2. No hidden ingredients
Unlike some plastics, glass doesn’t leach chemicals, especially when exposed to heat or light. You get only what we put in—nothing more, nothing less.
3. Fully recyclable and reusable
Glass can be recycled infinitely without losing quality. And even better: it can be washed and reused, which is what many of our customers already do.
4. Feels right in the hand
Let’s be honest—drinking from a cold glass bottle just feels more natural. More real. It connects us to a time when things weren’t made to be thrown away.
Challenges and Trade-Offs
We’re not pretending glass is perfect. It’s heavier. It breaks. It’s more complex to distribute and collect. But we believe that doing the right thing often requires more effort.
Behind the scenes, our team works hard to:
Source recyclable and returnable glass jars
Encourage retailers and customers to participate in return programs
Minimize breakage through better logistics
Reuse packaging in safe and hygienic ways wherever possible
This isn’t a system designed for maximum profit. It’s designed for minimum waste.
The Refill Culture
One of the quiet joys we've seen is the way many Artesana customers treat our glass jars and bottles.
Some return them through shop partners. Others repurpose them for spices, juices, nuts, or even as flower vases. We’ve seen jars in schools used as pencil holders. Bottles turned into olive oil containers. It’s a kind of informal circular economy—and we love it.
We didn’t invent this mindset. But we’re proud to help keep it alive.
Paper, Not Plastic
Where possible, we’ve also shifted to paper-based labels and wraps. No foil seals, no unnecessary plastic sleeves. Just simple, functional materials that serve a purpose—and can be composted or recycled.
Even our branding is minimalist. We want our jars to be clean, not cluttered. To blend into your kitchen, not scream from the shelf.
Because sustainability isn’t loud. It’s quiet, deliberate, and thoughtful.
Looking Ahead
As we prepare to attend the 2025 Go Global Awards in London, we’re reflecting on what it means to grow as a company while staying grounded in our values.
Scaling up doesn’t mean selling out. We’re exploring more efficient return programs, better reverse logistics, and even collaborating with other Romanian producers to build shared glass return systems.
Because one company can’t change the world. But it can help set a standard.
Final Thought
We’re not perfect. But we’re trying. Every label, every lid, every jar is a chance to choose better.
And when you pick up an Artesana product and feel the weight of that glass in your hand, know this: it’s more than just packaging. It’s a promise.
To do things with care. To respect what we take from the earth. And to never treat something valuable—like milk, or materials, or people—as disposable.—
