ruminating a little more on Watchmen as an intertext with Act 6; with Gl'bgolyb dying along with Alternia, one assumption we might be forced to make is that, like Ozymandias, Meenah was forced to create her own monster when it came to invading the Earth... and that being the case, it's only natural to wonder if the psychic scream that kept thwarting her attempts to resurrect the trolls was also, like Ozymandias', a fabrication of her own making (hence the "fakeness attribute" of Jane's "frightening fauna")

I've wondered in the past if Gl'bgolyb reflects back at Meenah a fear of her own womb (again, in the same way Ozymandias' monster acts as a manifestation of his homosexual gynophobia). looking at things from this angle, the wording of Dirk's retelling becomes more interesting: "the thing is a kind of an enigma [...] a double edged eldritch horror. As much in her service as it is calling the shots [...] Or so the story goes." like maybe it's not just Homestuck using Gl'bgolyb as a metaphor for Meenah's barrenness (baroness), but Dirk himself using it as a literary device for Jake - to whom the frightening fauna are very much real?

or even just that Meenah herself concocted the Gl'bgolyb story to justify why she was for whatever reason unable to conceive. Dirk and the Condesce both have reasons to be acting as "scratch doctors" here, making Earth's history seem more like Alternia's even when it wasn't necessarily..

the reason an apocalypse buff “is something you can be on Alternia“ is because, just as it is a planet that suffers under every possible kind of dystopia, Alternia bears the scars of a history of apocalyptic events; (repeated) political uprising and suppression, undead plague and alien invasion are just the examples that are the most clear in the text. and this is of course deliberate; Alternia’s trolls have had apocalypse after apocalypse thrown at them to culturally prepare them to leave their world behind entirely once the species of their race, SGRUB, is fulfilled.

Aradia and Sollux go by the tags “apocalypseArisen” and “twinArmageddons” because they’re psychically aware of another imminent world ending event; but I think even they are aware that this is far from something unique to them. generations of warmbloods will have gone through this same experience, knowing that it’s only a matter of time before the forces that be wipe them from the face of the planet like a stain to make way for the next iteration of the regime. the tragedy of a story like Hiveswap isn’t that we all know it’s going to end in a meteor shower anyway; the tragedy is that no matter what any of the characters achieve, it can only end in yet another in a long line of tragedies that stretches forever in both directions. the crushing piston in Alternia’s machine is inevitability; how can you hope to escape what has already happened and will happen again for perpetuity?

TT: Though the Baroness made very few substantive gestures of aggression, the global fear of her looming threat would trigger all the changes she needed. TT: Governments prepared for war, as if to defend against the invading alien armies she undoubtedly commanded. TT: But of course, she had no army. She was always the only of her kind. TT: Instead, the world powers were only setting about to build her armies for her.

recently I've been wondering again what Gl'bgolyb was doing on Earth, especially if all she was accomplishing there was ruining the Condesce's plans... I've been bouncing around comparisons between the emissary and Maplehoof which haven't really seemed to amount to much beyond "they were both cloned", still leaving open the question of why the Condesce would clone such a problematic element. but if the Condesce really were, to coin a phrase, "pulling a Watchmen" on the governments of Earth, that would go some way toward explaining how having a genocidal monster on her side might have proved beneficial?

living safely in the knowledge that Lord English brought the green moon to Alternia directly from his session, one is tempted to find a place for the final stray piece of the puzzle. if Scratch chose to bring in a planet from his old reality rather than grab one from somewhere else in universe A, it seems a little farfetched that he’d go fishing all the way into the furthest reaches of space for an outer god to manipulate trollkind with. so it stands to reason, doesn’t it, that Caliborn first encountered Gl’bgolyb in his own session?

funnily enough, there was a Gl’bgolyb living on Caliborn’s Earth, thousands of years before his birth, but thousands of years after the original Gl’bgolyb’s supposed death... leading us to believe that either the Condesce cloned her original lusus - unlikely, since the thing only stomped on her other, perhaps more pressing cloning project - or that this thing somehow survived long enough to become the original Gl’bgolyb in the first place, and where, if it stayed on that planet for long enough, it might have met with a certain aspiring young Lord of Time very early on in his conquest.
