RARE SURVIVOR IN BALKAIL GLEN
The ruin of a dovecot provides a doorway to the past. Balkail Glen runs alongside the village of Glenluce and is a community woodland that provides evidence about how people lived in the past. The trees in the valley have been identified an ancient woodland that was later adopted as a designed landscape for Balkail House and is now managed as a recreational woodland to be enjoyed by the community.
Balkail House has long been demolished and the dovecot is a rare survivor of the an historic environment illustrating the functional needs of an estate. They were built to house pigeons to provide food for the lairds table with their droppings providing a useful by product to fertilise the adjacent walled garden. Later dovecots became status symbols and the location of this one, sitting on higher ground visible from the original house, suggests that it was valued as an architectural feature.
Friends of Balkail Glen
The dovecot continues to have relevance to us today because our current use of the woodland gains from an understanding of their designed purpose as well as contributing to the distinct character of Balkail Glen. PLACE in the Biosphere project is helping Friends of Balkail Glen to manage the woodland for future generations to enjoy.
Other dovecots in the Biosphere include Crossraguel Abbey and Dunure Castle.

The company has bought three sites as part of its first offer agreement with the John Laing Group.
