Looking back on a long slog up to Littledale Edge from Gatesgarth on a glisky autumnal morning. 24 hours earlier the Lakes had been inundated by a tumultuous downpour with 75 mph winds forcing the abandonment of the 2008 Original Mountain Marathon (OMM) that “could have ‘turned mountains into a morgue’” according to one sensationalist headline.

Bandcamp Band of the Week: glisk
Even in the interconnected, instant gratification, web-driven world of today, it seems like certain music scenes get looked over. Perhaps it’s the whole being at the bottom corner of the planet that’s mitigated global attention, but I feel like Australia is well overdue for a hype explosion. (There’s a lot more to the tiny continent’s contemporary music scene than Cut Copy and Architecture in Helsinki, though much is owed to these trailblazers.) Fellow music blog Rose Quartz, which is based in Austraila and New Zealand, does a great job at highlighting what’s coming up from down under, as does the non-profit New Weird Australia, which, in addition to many other things, puts out compilations from emerging Aussie/Kiwi acts (also available on Bandcamp). So it’s on that note that we bring you our latest BcBotW, glisk (lower case for style points).
Made up by the South Austraila duo Mike Radz and Anny Duff, glisk operate in the world of softly spun snyth and drum-machine pop, balanced by gender sharing vocals. Duff takes the lead on the first half of Servants Heart’s four songs with her ephemeral, wispy vocals that linger and trail more than they emote. In other words, her voice folds into the arrangements seamlessly, more of a complementary instrument than lyrical vessel. Which is a nice foil for when Radz takes over on the title track and “Town Century”, both of which could give Cold Cave a run for their money.
There’s a more visceral impact in Radz’ voice; it carries a deep but light quiver, conveying someone who’s just getting comfortable with expressing his feelings openly. On “Servants Heart”, he sounds like someone caught between quiet, modest insecurity and an emboldened sense of confidence, particularly when he chokes out the refrain, “No, I won’t go quiet,” as the song sputters to a close. In the quick jump to “Town Century”, Radz already sounds more assertive, which might also explain the introduction of the consistent and catchy guitar line that dominates the track.
