A useful plant for autumn is Clerodendrum bungei (glory flower) providing there is space for it to spread. This is a suckering shrub that can be cut back each year like an herbaceous perennial. The large leaveas have a distinctive scent similar to Marmite but the terminal clusters of small pink flowers are sweetly fragrant.

The late summer, sweet-scented flowers of Clerodendrum bungei (glory flower) were adding colour to the garden of Great Dixter, Sussex, UK, and forming a compliment to the pink flowered Anemone japonica (Japanese anemone). Clerodendrum is a suckering deciduous shrub with large, almost bacon-scented leaves, often flushed purple when young. It grows well in fertile, rich, moist, but well-drained soil in full sun. It will spread and can be considered invasive as it sends up new shoots through a border.
