Also, as a part of those drawsperiments, I did a pic of @mmmskulljuice‘s Methyl, and decided to color it in!

It’s a bit wonky, but I do think the lineart came out pretty well for drawing her from memory....

Tho I sadly didn’t mention it in that post, @mmmskulljuice‘s story Long Live The King is one of the best examples of Rakuga Horror around, and the whimsical-with-a-dark-edge Eyeball King is emblematic of it.

Essentially the story is about a man who starts seeing into a world full of singing, talking eyeball people, pursuied by a horrifying eye-gouging monster called “The Perforator,” and waiting for their mysterious “king”

And, it’s all very cute, aside from the dark implications of how the King is ultimately found and freed, and what that might mean for other eyeballs...

The creator said she was inspired by classic surreal-unsettling short Balloon Land, and you can definitely see the influence.

In both there‘s a fantastical creativity in the world of eyes, but again it always has its dark edge. It has rules, but the rules are more akin to a fairy tale or dream, the inhabitants are weird but cute, but the more you look at it the more you realize there are so many unanswered questions and unsettling implications about the setting.

And that, I think, is an underrated part of Rakuga Horror, the fact that there’s a surreality and whimsy, but they’re all part of something very dark, not even hidden away but interweaved within it.

More people should really try that...
