Bob's ears ring as Emily finishes her speech. Words blur together, her voice growing more and more distant. Bob tries to suck in a breath. His lungs feel tight. His ribcage contracts. The clock in the corner ticks rhythmically, the sound suppressing anything else in the room.
A loud clink snaps Bob out of his stupor. Kate clinks her glass with Emily's, then with Mike's. Bob blinks rapidly, only to lock eyes with John, who tips his glass towards him across the table with a nod, gaze sharp, lips curled at the corner. Bob stares back, too caught up in the moment until Kate extends her glass towards him.
