Glow Worms | New Zealand: Earth's Mythical Islands
Gnat larvae lairs are in dark dank forest overhangs where the extreme moisture is put to good use. As night settles, the genius of their deadly traps is revealed: the bioluminescence is generated by a chemical reaction within their tail, creating an irresistible lure. The hungrier they are, the brighter they glow drawing in victims like moths to a flame.
When I kill a spider
I think of all the lives the spider ate
When I kill a gnat
I think of all the gnats never born
I tell myself
I do what I must for my safety
For my comfort
Last night I killed a firefly
I thought it was a cockroach
I watched it glow for the last time
It flailed
Legs stretched out to grasp another moment
Even one millisecond more of life
I cried
How cruel
How awful
To cry over one thing for its beauty
When I would in silence grieve creatures
That do not glow
When I die
I hope I do not have to explain
I hope there is no one who keeps count
Of the lives I have taken
Needlessly
When convenient
When I could have taken the time
The effort
To show respect
To other creatures trying to survive
Like me
Oh, I see we're in one-single-annoying-gnat-fucking-flying-in-your-face-no-matter-where-you-are season
Hmm. I left 2 disposable containers of acrylic paint water, one full of mostly white paint and the other having mixed into a nearly turquoise color, to evaporate before throwing them away, and no less than 5 gnats have drowned themselves in the blue one while the white one is bug free
Entomologists get on it, we may be may onto something here
