Sperm Whale Calf 🐋 Asia: Beneath the Waves (2024)

This baby sperm whale plays with a mangrove seed practicing his coordination. He produces pulses of high frequency sound from his large head; sonar that will eventually enable him to locate prey in the black depths. Zeroing in on a tiny seed is great practice. When you're as big as this, grabbing something the size of a pencil is not easy.

It's breeding season and this 15yo stallion (darker coat) must rise to the challenge presented by his younger rival. Like prize-fighters they size each other up, stamping and posturing. The intruder is younger and bigger, but the wily old stallion has years of combat experience. A stamp of his foot says "bring it on".

This bird turns our trash into treasure as long as it's a blue colour. The male builds a bower - full of sticks and leaves - and decorates it with any blue items he's found. He creates an artistic bower that doubles as a stage to woo a female. It's one of the most elaborate decorated structures designed in the animal kingdom.
