MY INSPIRATION
Here is a short story behind the choice of my BA thesis topic.
My Story I’ve played ice hockey for 10 years and I clearly remember; noticing what I ate before a match and noticing how that affected my concentration level, my ability to perform and make important decisions on the ice.
One day before a match, I distinctively remember eating a take-away hamburger with a big fries and a medium sized coke (a meal rich in saturated fats, high in carbs, sugar and salt) – My performance on the ice was significantly worse, it was difficult to concentrate and I felt very drained from energy. – No wonder!!
Another day before a match, I remember eating a delicious and nutritious meal; Chicken breast with spaghetti with plenty of veggies, splashed down with a glass of water. My performance on the ice that night was remarkably better and my concentration was higher than usual. All-in-all a great experience on the ice! I found it in some way fascinating! I experienced it again and again with food and drinks I consumed and how it affected my performance.
I never thought that that experience would become the basis behind my BA thesis.
My BA thesis When I started at the Global Nutrition and health programme in August 2011, I had the idea that I wanted to look into the relation between health and performance; how healthy living, healthy eating and having the “right” and healthy mindset can improve one’s performance and productivity. That was my starting point. Through these three years I’ve swaying back and forth with different ideas and interest in the vast field of health, but I always came swaying back to my starting point.
Today, my BA thesis focuses on exactly that idea: the relation between health and performance & productivity. The target group is found and the actions are implemented, data is being collected and I have an intensive 9 weeks of BA writing ahead of me… I’ll see you on the other side of 2014!! :-)
