clary couldn’t technically vouch for which came first, the chicken or the egg, but still, she maintained that this position aligned with her very soul. it was presented to her at a young age, she was taught to protect, but to this day, she still liked to believe it was in her nature to begin with.
she also believed this was what separated her from many who shared her training, and position. her own mind, her specific brand of empathy for humankind, is what caused her to grow ever so fond of raz. it wasn’t exactly a forbidden concept, to care personally for the one you guarded, though many warned against it. it was a job, at the end of the day, to a majority. you are merely there to fulfil a need. but that wasn’t clary. she never was one for such extreme detachment.
