All right. We're here, on June 2nd. Cubs have an off day today. We're a third of the way through the season. Let's see how we're doing.

*Keep in mind that 2 of those home losses were the Tokyo games.

What the hell is happening.

The Cubs...are tied for the best record in the National League. They are three-way tied for 2nd best record in all of baseball. The only team with a better record is the Tigers.

The Cubs...lost one of their top starters for the year in mid-April, who wasn't pitching all that well in the games he did play. The Cubs have been without their other top starter for a month. The starting pitching is a hodge-podge of veterans, rookies, and a guy who missed out on a starting pitching spot for one of those rookies.

The bullpen was a complete mess for a month, which has scarred us for the rest of the season even though they've been pretty solid for a while now.

The bright spot is the position players, as offense and defense has been stellar. Now that we finally, hopefully, have a competent third baseman in Matt Shaw, maybe the carnival of third base can come to an end after an agonizing four years. But is all that offense for real? Is it just recency bias that drives concern?

Anxiety seems to be a major factor of my Cubs fandom. There's a distinct dread as we head into June that this has been a fun ride, but it'll all gonna come crashing down. Some lackluster outings from the starting pitching is weighing heavily on my mind, but are those cracks for real or is it just jumping on singular outings to validate concerns? Does Ben Brown just need an opener to pitch 6 shut-out innings? Can Colin Rea keep it together? Shota, when are you coming back???

I should enjoy the ride. The Cubs are playing their best ball since 2016. But man, stop with all these stories of "on pace for a 101 win season", that's not good for my hopes.
