Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
When new species are introduced to an ecosystem, the effects can sometimes be complicated. Round gobies are an invasive species in the Great Lakes region of North America, but they themselves are one of the primary predators of another invasive species, the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha)! A single round goby can eat up to 40 zebra mussels in a day, which scientists believe can help to reduce the spread of zebra mussels in the region.
