What’s troubling you?
With everything that’s going on right now, you’ve probably got a list. I know I do.
Maybe a better question is what isn’t troubling you?
We all like it when things are easy, when things are going our way. But if we can’t have that, we at least like to know how things are going to go. What’s going to happen next.
Right now? It’s uncertain. All of it.
And that’s really what’s troubling you and me. No matter what we’ve got on our list. At bottom, it’s the uncertainty that’s making us troubled.
When we’re hit with uncertainty on the level we’re dealing with right now? You and I try to deal with that in a lot of different ways.
Maybe we try to control something. Or plan for a never-ending string of what-ifs. Maybe we hide from it in distractions. Or even addiction. Maybe we just shut down.
What do all of those ways of dealing with uncertainty have in common?
All of them are doing the same thing, looking at ourselves. All of them are saying the same thing, “I’m doing this on my own.”
Like everything else grounded in doing it on your own, none of them work.
So what does work?
Stop looking at yourself. And start looking at God.
It’s what Jesus is talking about in today’s Gospel. Where He says that He has already gone ahead of us.
You and I don’t have to try to sort it out all the uncertainty on our own.
There is nothing about your destiny that is uncertain. Not to God. He has already prepared a way for you, and a place for you.
Which means that our attitude should be this –
God, I can’t see it just now. But I know that you’ve prepared a place for me.
God, I don’t understand all of this. But I trust you.
God, I don’t see a way. But I know you have a way.
