Johannes Vermeer’s ‘Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window’
Experts are currently uncovering an image of a large cupid that was hanging on the wall behind her.
More than two and a half centuries later, laboratory tests have determined beyond a doubt that the symbol of love was covered up decades after the Dutch artist’s death in 1675. Previously it was thought that Vermeer had covered up cupid himself.
The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden in Germany has decided to remove the overpainting from the Dutch Old Master’s work, which normally hangs in the institution’s Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. The museum plans to restore the work according to Vermeer’s original intention, which conveys that the young woman is reading a love letter.
The existence of the cupid has long been known by researchers. In 1979, an x-ray first revealed the image of the naked god of love, either in a frame or as a framed fresco within the painting. At the time, it was thought that Vermeer had overpainted the figure himself, preferring instead the resulting empty wall.
In 2017, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden’s painting conservator Christoph Schölzel began working on the famous canvas. X-ray, infrared reflectography imaging, and microscopic analyses were then re-evaluated in Dresden.
Vermeer painted relatively few paintings in his lifetime and died in debt. His oeuvre of around 40 works, includes Girl With a Pearl Earring, Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window, and Woman Holding a Balance, which are among the most well-known paintings in the world.

Aphrodite and the Angel Of Death (teaser)
Warnings: Angst, pastlives, Mythology and Angels combination, and a prochecy.
..............................................
It is said,
By the creater of all,
Two lovers will come together
And embrace one another,
With love so strong,
It shall last for all eternity,
Neither death or destruction
Nor heaven or hell,
Olympus or the Underworld,
Could ever break the love,
Of Aphrodite and her one true love,
Tis the Angel of Death.
................................................................
"Why are we here, Gabriel?"
The blonde haired and rather fit angel didn't look at me, instead stared off into the distance.
"Do you believe in pastlives, Michaela?"
I put my hands in my pockets analyzing the beautiful yet tiny humans that walked by. "I've never thought about it before, Gabriel."
"Maybe you should." He said, turning to me. "And why is that?" I focused in on a rather handsome man with greased back dark brown locks, holding the hand of a girl around his age, with long cherry red hair. "Because that's you." He stated.
"Who is me?"
Gabriel froze time with a snap of his slender fingers. "The girl holding hands with the man your eyeing."
"You are truly insane, Gabriel." I laughed out, causing no reaction from the Archangel. "Why am I here, Brother?"
"To see." He walked towards the frozen couple. "To see what?" I walked to his side, waiting patiently for a response. "To see yourself," he turned to me slowly, "And to see him."
I stepped closer to the handsome man, only to start noticing how much he resembled Aphrodite, known as Thomas by the Gods and Angels, and me. The boy was my best friend.
When I took in the features of the woman standing next to him hand in hand, looking more in love than I had ever seen two humans be, I almost fainted. She was me! "What is going on?!"
"You're looking at your past life, Michaela."
"Okay," I breathed out, "But why am I holding hands with the God Of Love?" I felt my knees start to buckle, and almost fall to them on the concrete sidewalk.
"Because," he laid his hand on my shoulder softly, please don't tell me he's going to die. I can't live without him. "You're the prophecy." I let out a sigh of relief. I don't understand why I had became so tense.
"Prophecy?"
Gabriel nodded at me. "What prophecy?"
"The Eternal Lovers."
"Oh." I made direct eye contact with Gabriel. "Oh!". He nodded at me, allowing me to take this in.
"So," I began, "You're telling me," I got closer to him, "The Angel of Death," he nodded, "Is destined with the God Of Love?"
Gabriel nodded, and before I knew it, I passed out. It felt as if my entire body was being yanked into a deep sleep by some powerful force. My eyes rolled back into my head, and judging by the heat that was begining to burn my skin, they were glowing. I tried to fight it, to stay consious, but Gabriel whispered in my ear, "Just relax." And I slipped away.
"Alison!" The love of my life called to me, "Do you want some pancakes my love?"
I smiled brightly at Peter, nodding. "Do you want a kiss in return, soldier boy?" He smirked at me, pulling me into a passionate and loving kiss.
"I don't want you to go." I pleaded, holding one the rough fabric of his uniform. I could hear the bus driver honking, calling for all drafted men and boys to hurry up. "I won't be gone long, Doll." He whispered, placing his forehead on mine. "Besides," he lifted my chin up to meet his beautiful brown eyes, "Who's going to make you pancakes?"
The dream began to show me writing letters to the soldier, and the heartache yet true love that we both felt for one another. "Come home, honey." I wrote down, sealing the letter.
It never showed me getting a letter back after that one.
It only showed the soldier fighting the Germans, seeming to be doing alright, when all of a sudden a gun was fired, loud and clear, and the beautiful solider fell down, lifeless.
And then I woke up.
I felt tears forming puddles of heartache and sadness in my eyes, my heart aching for the solider I loved. "Peter?" I breathed out, and Gabriel crouched next to me. "Peter," he whispered to me, "Dylan, Alex, Frankie," he pulled me into a hug, "And many more."
"Brother," I held onto him for dear life, "The Eternal Lovers always die." I sobbed.
"Yes, sister." He pulled me even closed, "But there souls and love life on forever."
"Was that Thomas?" I whispered, "From back in the 40s?"
"Yes, Michaela." He lifted me up by my shaking hands. "And that woman I dreamed of being," Gabriel pulled out of the hug, Was that me?"
"Indeed it was sister."
