As a new fan Moulin Rouge was the first program I've seen but Umbrellas of the Cherbourg made me fall in love with them. Everything about this is magical. Their movements, how soft and light they moved on ice.

Worlds 2017 FD Press Conference

S: Our goal this year is, it wasn’t so much about winning. So, you know when we got into these pressure situations, we try to remind each other what our goal was, and what our perspective was. And that started with, you know, when we were watching Nationals last year, and Worlds last year and about how much we were going to enjoy skating again and how we were going to be together on the ice. And our whole approach today was trying to do that.

[Scott Russell: Tessa you said, it’s all about the Olympics and getting back to the Olympics. What is it about the Olympics?]

T: When we imagined ourselves sitting at home, watching the Pyeongchang Olympics, it just didn’t sit well. There’s something so incredibly special about being part of Team Canada, about being surrounded by the best athletes in the world.

[Scott Russell: One more thing that you said Scott. You said: at this point in my life, there’s nowhere I’d rather be than skating with her. Do you buy that?]

S: Still! I’m still selling that.  It is true and you talked about the lessons and we’re still learning about each other and we’re learning to be the best that we can be. And there really is no one else I’d rather do that with.

T: I feel I need to say the same! It’s not just a one-way street.

On being named flag bearers (behind the scenes at flag photoshoot)

T: Every part of our athletic career has happened together, every training session, every gym session, every on ice competition. It sort of marks the culmination of our 20-year partnership and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate that.

S: I mean, it’s a dream come true. We definitely didn’t expect this. It’s been the honour of my life, I think, to share this moment with her and to see the athlete that she is, the person that she is, I can’t think of anyone more deserving.

T: It means the world to us. This is certainly the highest honour in our career.

[Scott Russell: You have a history, you two. You’ve been together for over 20 years as sporting partners, partners in life. How important is it that you do this very significant thing together?]

S: I think it’s … I mean, it’s so special for Tess and I. We do have a very special friendship, a special work relationship and I couldn’t imagine doing it with anyone else. I mean … uhh, words are kind of slipping me right now but it’s going to be the honour of a lifetime for me to walk in with Tessa.

Three of your favourite qualities about their partnership

Trust

There is so much trust in this partnership. It’s such an important part of any partnership, but even more so in one that involves spinning blades, the pressure of public scrutiny, and elite sportsmanship. It is easy to see why some might prefer to go it alone and compete in singles - apart from the obvious higher prize money - to not have to rely on anyone else would be a big draw, what if they let you down? But in the case of Tessa and Scott the opposite is proven. What if they hold you up?

Respect

Their respect for each other is huge. How many times in interviews have they applauded one another, praised one another, handed each other all of the glory, despite the fact that they are equals. They aren’t selfish with their respect, neither one tries to take it for themselves. They believe in each other’s abilities. On and off the ice. Consider Tessa’s jewelry line, Scott had only great things to say about her just as she has great things to say about him.

Love

Whether you think their love for each other is romantic or not, it would be difficult to deny they love each other at all. This is an integral part of their partnership and builds out of - and enhances - the first two. They know they will always be there for each other and that they see each other as the best, that sort of support is hard to find, it has to be created. That sort of love that only comes after many years of living closely with someone and seeing them as their best selves and their worst. It’s a love that can’t be hidden and won’t disappear.

5 favourite things about Tessa and Scott’s 2017-2018 SD

1. Their chemistry - I don’t think I need to explain this one and I’m not sure I’d be able to put it into words ;)

2. The way they make Latin look as close to ballroom as it can look on ice.  Absolutely uncanny, unmatched and as a skater I can say - pretty difficult.

3. The music - I am such a huge Rolling Stones fan and I kid you not, Sympathy for the Devil was my most-played song of summer 2017 (way before we found out they were using it - as you can imagine I freaked out). I love their classy within edgy choices that both work so well for this program and are different from most people’s.

4. The complexity - this dance is so complex, they are doing way more steps and difficult transitions than they need to, because they like to challenge themselves and the sport by not staying in their comfort zone. One of my favourite qualities of theirs and this program is a perfect example.

5. How much fun those two are having - I just love seeing Tessa and Scott this happy and enjoying themselves with a program like that.
