“Did you hear what they did to his mother?”
The soldiers were ringed around the fire, discussing the Red Wedding as though it were no more than particularly morbid gossip. Brienne was not with them. She sat on a stump a few yards away, but she couldn’t help but hear.
“After they opened her throat,” the man continued, “they stripped her naked and threw her in the river. A real Tully funeral.” He chuckled, as did some of his friends. Brienne had lost her appetite days ago, but she had forced herself to eat. If she ate another bite now, however, she would be ill. She set her bowl aside, trying not to imagine what had become of her lady. Now the man was describing how they’d left Lady Catelyn’s body to rot for a day before the river. She couldn’t bear to hear another word.
Brienne pushed herself to her feet and hurried away, towards the tent that had been provided for her. Men were still speaking behind her, but now she could not decipher their words. Perhaps they mocked her. She was past caring. Supporting herself on a thin sapling, Brienne bent over, her breath catching in her throat.
