Golden Gate
Spanning the Bay with Style
#OnThisDay in 1933, construction began on the Golden Gate Bridge. The structure played a huge role in the development of San Francisco and has become an internationally recognized symbol of the city.
But it wasn't always this way. In fact, the idea for a bridge spanning the Golden Gate Strait (the narrow waterway between San Francisco and Marin County) was first proposed way back in the 1800s. It wasn't until the 1920s that serious plans for construction began to take shape.
A lot of debate and controversy surrounded the construction of the bridge. Some people thought it was too expensive and wouldn't even be used, while others feared it would ruin the natural beauty of the area. But despite the pushback, construction began in 1933, and the bridge was finally completed in 1937.
When it was finished, the Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world (a title it held until 1964). It was also the first bridge to use steel cables wrapped in wire instead of chain links, which helped make it more flexible and able to withstand strong winds and earthquakes.
Here is the White House Stenographer’s Diary entry for May 27th, 1937, recording FDR’s Golden Gate telegraph appointment. The President telegraphed at three o’clock Eastern Standard Time so the California procession could begin promptly at noon.
