Balaclava Mines, Whroo, Australia: Whroo Historic Area is 65 hectares of a remnant gold mining township within the world’s largest ironbark forest of 24,300 hectares. The open cut of the impressive Balaclava Mine marks one end of the journey. Remnants of Victoria's gold rush era can be discovered all along the way. Underground storage tanks, mining shafts and tunnels, building rubble and foundations, century old rubbish dumps and gold mining infrastructure comprise an historic treasure trove.. California goldfields (Lasthenia californica) may be our most ubiquitous spring wildflower. After rainy winters it’s common to see entire hillsides turn a golden yellow from a carpet of these tiny flowers.
This past winter was dry until March, so sadly they’re much scarcer than usual.
