Probably going to get hate for this but I don't agree with the hate Harry is getting for not acknowledging the Black Lives Matter signs at tonights show. I mean, everyone is entitled to show support and talk about what they choose to. While he does openly support LGBT and that is a touchy subject, BLM is unfortunately on a different level as far as hate goes. If he were to support it, people would be unhappy just as they are that he said nothing. Him saying nothing doesn't mean he doesn't support it. It's just something he chooses not to talk about openly and that is FINE. If he waved the flag or held one up that would open up this whole thing and it is something no one would stop asking him about so keeping his mouth shut is what he chooses to do and that's his decision. He shouldn't be criticised or get so much hate just because he made a choice on what to openly support. You don't know how he feels about BLM so stop assuming just because he didn't wave the flag or acknowledge it that he automatically is against it. He's always said to spread love, all the love, right? So let's treat people with kindness and remember he is entitled to his opinion and how he chooses to express it just like you and I. You can be upset with him, that's your decision, but hating when you don't know how he actually feels towards the subject is what my problem is. Not saying something or not waving a flag doesn't mean a thing so I feel like we should just spread the love instead of hate.
I am going to start out by saying I am not inherently a fan of Stephen King’s work and not for want of trying and was turned to The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon by my long suffering and loving wife who occasionally tries to direct me away from my preferred genre’s. I have read a number of King’s work from his short stories to his novels and his non-horror works and I have never been able to pin what I don’t like about them even though I genuinely believe that he is a definite genius of our literary age.
King has created genuine terror and fear from his works in the past and present alike. From killer clowns to the enemy of this novella The God of the Lost, a fantastic conjured imagery of the worst that exists in the wilderness that humans are so naturally drawn to and it is all formed out of the imagination of a painfully ill, scared and possibly poisoned nine year old girl with a vivid and creative mind and love of baseball.
Let’s get the good out of the way first; the imagery, creativity and genuine emotional love of both the story and the environment he has written about is nothing more than sublime! Following Trisha McFarlane’s story of slowly unyielding insanity as she traverse’s the forest just hoping for anything of companionship from her beloved Red Sox player, apparently known as a Closer?
Unfortunately this is where my opinions turn sour on a fantastic story and highlights my issues with Stephen King as an author. Due to the continuous and almost non-stop usage of pop culture reference, many of which are very American in cultural from baseball terminology to the food she has, it was difficult to feel like I was in the story giving a serious feel of alienation from the subject and removing me from the narrative. After that the issues only mounted when the lack of consistent character image changed in the same chapter with the character going from jeans to leggings and then socks to stockings and then back to socks in one chapter. The lack of care and consistency with character imagery is only highlighted by the accurate time keeping and cartography and, as a writer myself, makes it so much worse.
There are scenes that caused great discomfort for me from the parents randomly having sex in the hotel room without any prompting to the use of racial driven terms (minstrel show) or ablest terminology (retarded person).
But!
After all that is said I thoroughly enjoyed the story as a great use of horror and timeline creating a perfect image of what this poor girl suffered and accurate research for survival in a wilderness situation and any of my gripes and criticisms eventually boil down to that I cannot get on with Stephen King’s writing style, syntax or use of language.
I heartily recommend the Girl who Loved Tom Gordan to anyone on the fence about Stephen King or just trying to get into the horror genre in general it is genuinely very good and a quick read as you could easily finish the whole read in a medium haul airplane flight.
Reading time: 6 hours
Reread chance: Medium – A good read and an excellent concept, a reread would give better insight into the story
yes it’s great to say black lives matter because they do. blacks get a lot of aggression towards them so it’s good to show positivity towards being black.
what isn’t great is to act like white aggression doesn’t exist. it’s rare but it does exist. in my city you’re more likely to be bullied for being white than black.
what isn’t great is to make fun of white people the same way racist people do to black people. making fun of the privileged won’t help the minority become equal. all it does is separate races even more. and saying “it doesn’t matter because it’s true” doesn’t justify it lmao it offends me sometimes. and some people think the jokes about black people are true. does that make it okay?
i think it should be fine to make racist jokes as long as you apologize if you offend anybody. but when people make white jokes but get so offended at black ones or ones of any other race for that matter, that isn’t okay.
I’M UP IN CRACK-SHIP SPACE- most of the time anyway :/
I don’t particularly understand the ship Hoshitani x Nayuki...or that kakeru x kaito, I mean don’t get me wrong- it’s cute..but it’s just like Ayato x Yui, Shin x Heroine, Kageyama x Hinata, Moka x Tsukune, its...just too typical (and canon)
P.s. this also includes Hinata x Komaeada and Mika x Yuu (and a heap more)
I’m one for the other girls (or guys) in the background...I just don’t like...typical (canon) couples..so when I found out Nayuki was somewhat friendzoned I was both happy and sad :/ don’t judge it’s late and I’m tired and I felt like doing this rant...
maybe I should go write a fanfic *sigh*
btw..if you want to know my ships or have questions or anything (I guess?) the ask box is always open o
You are in a rut. You are. A reading rut, a shipping rut, you’re just like, stuck in a rut.
Aren’t you bored of reccing and reading the same ten fics over and over again? Don’t you want to listen to some new authors and fresh faces and some unheard thoughts and opinions on your show?
Don’t you want to see some new work? You can appreciate all that old stuff, all the “classics.” (I agree with a friend in that I don’t like that word at all.) But don’t you want to explore some new parts of this city? There are new pairings to be found and discovered. Merthur is so fun, but you can like Merthur and still explore the Gwaine/Elyan pathways and the Gwen/Morgana parks.
Do you see the wealth of characterization you’ve received? So many stories untold, so many general stories to be explored, so many thoughts to be wrung out until we have squeezed the very juice from these plots and characters and possibilities. We have Vivian and Gilli and Elena and Gwaine and Elyan and Freya and all these untold stories! They can be and have and do anything!
And yet I see the same stories told over and over again, and I see the the same stories recced over and over again, and I see the same pairing loved over and over again and...
Like, I love you Merlin fandom, i really do, but there is so much you’re missing out on.
Please do not use the terms “radioactivity” or “X Rays”, and do not refer to planet Earth as anything more than a flat surface being orbited by the sun if you are not Polish. It’s cultural appropriation. Both of these things was invented by Marie Curie and Nicolaus Copernicus, Polish poeple who changed the world forever/
By using the terms “radioactivity” and “X Rays”, you are erasing the fact that it was invented by a woman coming from an oppressed, small country, and at that moment you are degrading our tradition and history.
By referring to the Earth as a planet orbiting the sun, you are erasing the fact that it was discovered by a Polish man, not some American white dude in a suit.
Maybe you should invent something yourself instead of stealing OUR cultural inheritance? Just because you have no culture it doesn’t give you the right to steal ours. It belongs to us Poles only. Only to us. Forever. You cannot use this knowledge or words. Its cultural appropriation. Very racist. Much nazi
So I follow alot of people who like five seconds of summer on tumblr because they followed me first and every once in a while I forget and then I just see them being all cute and shit and I'm like "Hey, who are these adorable men? Oh that's right a shitty pop punk band that is honestly awful..."
