i remember seeing jarhead at the cinema with a friend when i was like 15. i thought it was a tragedy about toxic masculinity. it depicted these elite snipers as hyper-masculine math nerds that simultaneously deify and sexualize their killing instruments. it showed the mental strain of fencing them together in the desert like livestock that have to burn their own waste, and how they embraced it as they viewed the promised violence that would follow as a right of passage. it showed the identity crisis that ensued when that right of passage is denied, no ‘pink mist’, and the complete lack of an inner life that’s left to victims of such institutionalisation.

and i remember that when we left my friend said “fuck that was cool, i really want to join the army” with complete sincerity.
