Tilion is maybe the funniest Tolkien character

Who's Tilion, you ask? He's the guy who drives the moon. The Noldor called him 'the Wayward,' a tactfully polite euphemism. What they meant to say, is, Tilion is just bad at his job.

Why does the moon appear in the sky during the day, but the sun never appears at night? Well, they're supposed to follow a schedule, and Arien- the woman who drives the sun- know's what she's doing, but Tilion just can't get his shit together. He can't figure out how to use the cruise control, I guess, because his pace is uneven. When the moon is new, it's because Tilion is lost in the caves under Middle Earth again. The caves he uses every night to get back to the east of the world.

This is subtext, mind you, and my own interpretation. What is said about Tilion is that he speeds through Valinor, then "...he would often wander long..." in the caves. But, subtext is everything in a tomb like the Silmarillion.
