Timing is everything

You have to get up pretty early in the morning to spear the first harvest from Jerry’s asparagus patch; I’m pretty sure I won the prize this year.

Jerry, a neighbor of ours, generally doesn’t return from his winter home in Arizona until May, so he’s never the early bird to his own garden.

Nonetheless, he appreciates the value of the first tender sprouts. He encourages some of his friend to monitor the progress and pounce when the time came. He started texting us reminders as soon as the weather began to turn.

I didn’t expect much when I wandered over there this weekend. Others had visited the patch in recent days only to come up empty.

Maybe it was the thunderstorm that coaxed the sprouts from the earth … In any case, I came home with a dozen spears. A good start.
