FFWF ask: How much begging would it take for you to write an Emmry/The Ghost and Mrs. Muir crossover? What do you think would be the toughest part to merge/adapt?

BOY HOWDY I WOULD NEVER HAVE DONE THIS BEFORE BUT UH IT’S GOTTA HAPPEN NOW!

(... so, pretty much no begging.)

So: this has been haunting me since I got this ask two hours ago, and I’ve been bouncing around what parts of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir are essential to the story versus what’s icing (Is it the setting? Is it the contrast between Captain Gregg’s lack of a pulse versus his more - please don’t throw things at me - obviously spirited personality? Is it about Mrs. Muir’s social/cultural position as a widow and a mother and how she struggles with the feeling of safety & home & her own needs versus those of her children/child?); and what parts of Emma/Henry are necessary for me versus what’s icing there (Is it Emma’s journey away from being a spoiled Southern belle towards an actual awareness of how evil the system she benefits from is? is it Henry’s struggle to deal with his emotions, positive or negative? Is it the war? Is it the hospital?).

And I’ve thought of a few permutations. The clearest set-up would be Emma haunting Mansion House after dying some time earlier (pick a disease, any disease. or maybe she fell down the stairs - they are rather impressive.) and thus be encountered by Henry, newly arrived a Union chaplain to the hospital. Why Emma decides that she’s going to mess with Henry in particular ... ??? I’m tempted to say that the temporary chapel is maybe in the old sitting parlor she liked best - the best light in the afternoon, or the best view of the back gardens (which are obviously no longer gardens, etc.) Or maybe she hangs out in the library all the time, since the rest of the place is always a mess. And as Henry’s the most constant resident of the places she thinks of as hers, she spends the most time trying to unsettle him, until Henry finally has had it with trying to convince himself that it’s a new place, it’s a war, he’s just imagining things and tells her to knock it off. So begins the ~romance~.

While I like this set-up, I’m not 100% sold on it, because I’m more invested in Emma as the dynamic character, and however much I do think Captain Gregg’s “Nothing can become of me. Everything’s happened, that can happen,” isn’t so much a statement that he himself can’t change, so much as a conviction that it doesn’t matter, where his relationship with Lucy Muir is concerned - I don’t know that I really want to write a story about Emma where she can’t or doesn’t fundamentally change how she thinks about the world - or that her change of heart can have no point or effect. That, and what happens after the war?

So, second possible permutation? Henry dies in Mansion House, either some time before the war, or, like, two days after he gets there (because that’s Henry’s luck in a nutshell, isn’t it?). There’s no reason for Henry to have known Emma well, and it’s not until the time of the first episode anyway that Emma starts spending any time in the Hospital. This still leaves room for Emma’s sea change of character, and for it to matter that she does change who she is over the course of the war ... and the idea of Henry Hopkins, sort of crotchety ghost who’s not even sure why he haunts kind of appeals to me?

Or we just scrap it and hew closer to the actual setting of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, which would perhaps require ignoring the better part of Emma and Henry’s specific relationship to the Civil War and the hospital, but could perhaps still have other elements - Mansion House being instead a resort hotel on the coast, maybe?

I think, from what I’ve bounced around, the hardest thing for me is balancing the way that Emma and Henry are themselves defined by their involvement in the world around them with the way that Lucy Muir and Daniel Gregg are instead removed from the world, literally and figuratively - that’s what I’ve been struggling to move the pieces around.

But I do want to write it now. :D
