im guess if i had to articulate it clearly, jane sees the majority of companions as people she needs to protect from the commonwealth. especially because her relationship with irina (a military officer) and her military-affiliated work kinda makes her... complicit in the circumstances that lead to the apocalypse? rare that we should say such a thing abou Pacifist, Leftist, Gay-Ass Jane Rachel but you know, like, she worked for the gov’t? so in sole survivor verse, when she looks at someone like piper, she sees an incredibly young woman she needs to protect from a terrible world, you get my vibe. whereas in companion verse she can see piper as a romantic/sexual subject and interact with her in that capacity, because they’re both part of the same world. but sole survivor jane’s position as being kind of, remote and out of time, means that she feels this responsibility toward her companions.
