GLHF Interview with Nihilism Gaming
GoodLuckHaveFunGaming had the opportunity to interview David Connell, the founder of Nihilism Gaming, a company that offers Heroes of the Storm coaching to players of all levels.
Disclaimer: This interview was not sponsored and both parties were sought out in mutual interest.
David, what are the benefits of coaching versus something more informal like following a guide online?
There are many issues with guides and advantages of coaching over them. First off, the credibility of a guide always comes into question. As the game is designed now, many situations change how a certain hero should be played. Popular guides often are short and simple because taking each one of these situations into mind when writing a guide would make the guide too long to be interesting content.
Coaching also allows for an instructor to [personally] help you work on the biggest problems first. For example, many players like to think a game is 'determined by the draft' while in fact expert drafting is an extremely advanced strategy that won't win the average player more games. More important issues are often present, such as positioning, and breaking the game down into simple concepts that can be practised one at a time under supervision, [allowing] for faster improvement.
Esports is a global phenomenon that is quickly becoming an international pastime, what is your opinion on being involved in the esports scene?
A harsh reality that I hear about a lot is that 'eSports is too reliant and constrained by sponsors'. We hope to diversify the eSports scene and grow along with the new and growing industry!
Unfortunately...according to some rough number crunching, the game might already be losing popularity [compared to League of Legends]. Hopefully the recent changes to matchmaking and Blizzard's dedication to growing the professional scene will cause this trend to reverse.
What is the philosophy behind your coaching company, Nihilism Gaming?
Nihilism Gaming...[shows] people that anyone can build a successful company. To do this we focus on a few major concepts.
1) Take good care of everyone involved!
2) Provide value.
3) Go above and beyond!
Nihilism Gaming offers replay analysis type coaching. What is the best replay to choose for a coaching session? (i.e. one where you lose/win, type of hero, partied up or solo queue, etc.)
The best replays to select are ones where both teams are well coordinated and the game is a close one. An absolute domination for one side or the other often has little value as a replay.
You talked about a structure for coaching lessons previously. Can you provide a quick walk-through of how someone would be coached?
The basic structure of our lessons is that the coach and the player play a game together and the player receives real-team feedback about their play. Then together they go over the replay. Lessons are catered to each player, however we have five main concepts that are normally discussed too.

What are the qualifications of your coaches?
Our head coach, Kam, has coached 4 different professional teams and currently manages PsiStorm Gaming. Kam is also in his 8th year of college working on his second degree related to gaming. We are currently in talks to pick up two of the PsiStorm players as coaches, and they both have long histories in professional gaming.
We look for a few key qualities in our coaches:
1) Skill/Knowledge of the content
2) Ability to take that content and apply it effectively in a learning environment
3) Ambition & Motivation
What led you to start a Heroes of the Storm coaching company and do you coach yourself?
I chose to start this company because of the [time] that I played Heroes of the Storm professionally. In the spring of 2015 I was captain of team TBA and within two months of playing we took 2nd place against Tempo Storm in an ESL Major tournament. However, I run the company and the coaches specialize in coaching.
Some readers may be interested in applying to your company as coaches. Is your company looking for coaches? If so, What are the minimum requirements?
We have many people interested in being coaches already, but feel free to send us a resume and we will keep you in mind. Minimum requirements include some professional background in eSports, especially coaching/playing for a Heroes of the Storm team, and a professional attitude (we take this very seriously). Any sort of schooling or experience on game design / teaching will also be seriously taken into consideration.
Well David, that concludes our interview and we at GoodLuckHaveFunGaming were glad to have you answer our questions as part of Tumblr’s Heroes of the Storm community.

Trick takes a moment to talk about a very important topic.
The magic community, like any amount of people subscribed to anticipated content, loves to get a preview of what is to come. We hope to get a glipse of the future, as if this information will make a difference, whether it be cards, movies, television shows or games.
What spoils do is merely confirm information already privy to designers and business executives, therefore, spoils are a type of dissemination of information. Leaks are unauthorized releases of information, so they run counter to business and design. There is lack of control in who this information is given to and any promotions around release is undermined.
To conclude, leaking hurts both business and design of a company.
