Cachear imagenes javascript y CSS en Google Gears
Hay ocasiones en las que en una página web tenemos que cargar varias librerías Javascript, otras tantas CSS, montones de imágenes, y algún que otro fichero PDF. En estos casos es normal que la carga del site se ralentice más de lo normal, por este motivo hoy vamos a ver como podemos cachear todo esto en la parte del cliente con Google Gears. Google Gears es un proyecto open source que permite hacer aplicaciones más potentes, añadiendo nuevas funcionalidades a nuestro navegador. Hoy simplemente vamos a utilizar una de las muchas características de Google Gears el LocalServer. Vamos a crear la siguiente estructura de ficheros: - index.html - cachthis.js - test.js - gears_init.js -> esta la descargamos y la ponemos tal cual en el directorio index.html

Es un ejemplo muy básico pero a la vez muy ilustrativo, una vez tengamos todos los ficheros instalamos Google Gears, y reiniciamos los navegadores. Si entramos en la página y pulsamos el botón nos mostrará por pantalla un alert diciendo "Hola", hasta aquí todo normal. En este momento Gears ya tendrá cacheado el fichero test.js, de modo que si volvemos a entrar en esta página, no lo descargará, sino que lo cargará de su caché. Como lo comprobamos.... Simple, modificamos el fichero test.js y lo dejamos del siguiente modo. test.js

Si volvemos a cargar la página y pulsamos el botón el mensaje que nos aparecerá por pantalla será "Hola" en lugar del que realmente contiene el fichero. Por último si queremos actualizar las versiones cacheadas que tienen nuestros usuarios, solamente tendremos que cambiar la versión del fichero 'cachthis.js' a una superior, y automáticamente se recargará.
Semi-offline Gmail
Den 27 januari fick Gmail's web-interface ett offline-läge. Har man installerat Google Gears, så kan man i Gmail Labs, slå igång ett offlinestöd. När det är igång, så synkroniserar Gmail upp dina mail, så att du har tillgång till dom även om du tappar din internetanslutning. När det är igång, så dels får man en liten synkroniseringssymbol precis till vänster om länken "Inställningar", samt att du får en ny "vy" i Gmail, som heter "Utkorg", där hittils oskickade mail ligger och väntar på uppkoppling. För att kunna komma åt Gmail Labs, måste man dock köra med Engelska (US) som språk i Gmail. Som tur är, behöver man dock inte köra med det språket, efter att man väl har slått igång de "Labs"-funktionerna som man vill anväda. I nuläget kör jag med tre-fyra labs-funktioner igångslagna på mitt Gmail-konto, samtidigt som jag har gmail på svenska. Google Application Engine vs Facebook f8
A quick search around the web and you'd think Google's Application Engine announcement was Google taking aim at Amazon's Web Services. While there maybe some cross-over, for the most part I don't believe Google is taking aim at Amazon, but Facebook's f8. I'd also like to point out that amongst all the news everyone seemed to forget about Microsoft's SSDS, while not an application engine yet is a large part of the offering. Also missing are the startups, e.g. Zoho creator. So, from the top...
Your phone is your social network.
If you don't believe this in my opinion you're mad, bonkers, a fruit cake. I carry my social network, my contacts, my friends in my pocket. I have access to them via voice, text/sms, and email from my iPhone. I had the same access on my Nokia N73 before that. Blackberrys do it, Skype does it, everyone does it. I'll assume you do as well.
Enter Jaiku. For those that don't know, Jaiku was acquired by Google on October 9th 2007, many people talk about Jaiku as a competitor to Twitter, Joi Ito described it as a "bunch of Helsinki mobile jocks getting into the Web 2.0 of it all whereas Twitter is the Web 2.0 crowd 'getting' co-presence". The Jaiku vs Twitter discussion is for another time, but of relevance here is Jaiku's J2ME client. It linked the online-ness of Jaiku into you phone contacts, synchronized and kept you updated.
The mobile platform, Android.
If the phone is your social network, what are companies doing? Well, the long and short of it is, not much. Sure, Facebook has possibly the best iPhone application in the market, and a mobile friendly version, however it's not enough (and if you know of a mobile social network with traction please let me know).
Contacts integration? Application platform? Oh, wait, yes, Android. I've not looked at Android, but I'm pretty sure it'll allow contacts integration. Jaiku is moving to Google Application Engine, what about the mobile application? It'd make perfect sense to move it to Android as well.
...a summary in my theory so far...

Voila, an open application platform with more features than Facebook and I believe Google has more users then Facebook. I've not touched on OpenSocial, however isn't this just Google taking a step back from OpenSocial and aiming for the bigger picture? e.g. Google Application Engine powers OpenSocial applications, that distribute onto all social networks.
The knowledge worker
Knowledge worker, a term coined by writer Peter Drucker in the late 50's and related thinking summarized basically is: hire the top-notch, smartest, most efficient people you can find... put them together, and let rip. Good things will come.
I am a believer of the knowledge worker model and to quote my own Twitter, "API's basically allow for the Knowledge Worker pattern to exist outside your business, while on-topic to your business", so what does that mean for Google? They're in the business of (among other things) web applications, they're opening their internals to the world via API allowing the world to build on-topic applications to their business (changing their famous 70/20/10 to 70/20/10/100). The proof in that is the launch of OpenID provider, built on Google Application Engine, in under 24 hours development.
Leaving notes
Many questions are unanswered, at least from an outsiders point of view. But, for now I'll be thinking about:
What does this mean for us? Among other things, that the first Google acquisition that runs on their Application Engine will be a notable event.
How will Google Application Engine and Android integrate? Will they?
Google Gears is mobile, no talk about integration yet. Maybe a Google Gears SQLite to GQL synchronization?
Google Checkout integration. It'll happen, follow the money...
The google.appengine.api.urlfetch inside Application Engine fetchs URL's, a long shot, but they could pump those straight into their Googlebot. Another way to boost their main business?
Yahoo is embracing the Semantic Web, is this an attack on Yahoo? They'll be a lot of semantic data in GQL. Mix that with Google Base.
How's users data ownership/privacy going to work across the board on this?
Google abandona Gears en favor de HTML 5
Google Gears ha servido como una herramienta intermedia que permite a los usuarios acceder a los servicios Google como si se tratara de una aplicación más instalada en el ordenador. Sin embargo, la aparición de HTML 5 y su enorme potencial para controlar aplicaciones web en modo offline ha hecho que Gears se convierta en algo innecesario. De esta forma, en Google han decidido hacer la transición de Gears a HTML 5 en forma progresiva, y además de obtener las mejoras que ofrece el protocolo, evitan varios problemas de compatibilidad relacionados con plataformas Mac y Linux.
Quienes tengan instalado a Google Chrome ya cuentan con una copia de Gears disponible. Al mismo tiempo, también es posible utilizar Gears en navegadores como Firefox, pero el resultado sigue siendo el mismo: Permitir a los usuarios acceder a los servicios que ofrece Google de forma local, sin necesidad de una conexión a Internet. He utilizado a Gears durante un buen tiempo, tanto en Chrome como en Firefox, y debo reconocer que no he encontrado ningún detalle para criticar. No es algo descabellado imaginar que Gears hubiera tenido una vida mucho más prolongada si HTML 5 nunca hubiera salido a la luz, pero con el nuevo protocolo siendo ampliamente adoptado por Google, la existencia de Gears ya no es relevante.
Google Gears le dejará su lugar a HTML 5
De acuerdo a los anuncios que ha hecho Google al respecto, muchos de los involucrados en el desarrollo de Gears también han participado de forma activa en HTML 5, integrando muchas de las virtudes de Gears al nuevo protocolo. De hecho, en Google consideran a HTML 5 como la "versión 2" de Gears, lo cual no es de extrañar teniendo en cuenta los puntos que tienen en común. Además de las capacidades offline y la posibilidad de prescindir de extensiones multimedia hechas por terceros para reproducir audio y vídeo (léase Flash), HTML 5 también se presenta como una plataforma universal definitiva, ya que su ejecución no está atada al sistema operativo, sino al navegador. Gears poseía varias restricciones, como por ejemplo su incompatibilidad con Safari 4 y Snow Leopard. Algo similar sucede en sistemas basados en Linux. La versión de Chrome para Linux se mueve un poco más lenta de lo previsto, y el adoptar a HTML 5 de forma definitiva debería evitar el detalle de desarrollar una versión de Gears exclusiva para Linux. Si bien esto es el final del camino para Gears, su salida permitirá concentrar aún más recursos en la hoja de ruta de HTML 5. Google ha apostado muy fuerte en el protocolo, y su desarrollo se volverá crítico ya que Chrome OS dependerá de él enormemente. Aunque me guardo una pequeña reserva para ver cómo se desacoplará Google Chrome de Gears, la movida es lógica, y se encuentra en línea con las últimas decisiones de Google. La intensificación de proyectos y aplicaciones basados en la nube necesitarán como nunca deHTML 5, y de la compatibilidad de todos los navegadores web disponibles. Google Gearsha sabido cumplir con su deber, pero al mismo tiempo representa una de las cosas que se busca eliminar, y es la dependencia sobre extensiones. Apenas una razón más para dejarlo ir, pero no con tristeza, sino con satisfacción por lo que ha sabido aportar a la navegación web de hoy.

Google Gears up for Behavioral In-App Ads
Search engine giant Google is getting ready to offer behavioral ads through its iOS and Android applications. Establishing itself as a leader in providing mobile ads, Google is also gearing up for a new technology that will allow them to keep tabs on conversions from handsets that ran iOS and Android platforms.
In order to keep track of these conversions, Google will make use of unique ID numbers that come with every mobile handset. With the help of these device identifiers and the phone user’s in-application behavior and preferences, Google will be able to help advertisers with more targeted ads. Although there are now a number of carpeting firms making use of these device identifiers Google has, till now, avoided utilizing these unique ID numbers due to privacy concerns.
With the help of this technology, Google will be able to filter spam more effectively and increase conversions by running ads based on the interest of the user. So in practice, the technology should allow only relevant in-app ads to be shown with the number of irrelevant in-app ads minimized. All in all, this would improve the user’s experience in utilizing Google’s applications at the same time strategically help advertisers and developers.
In order to assure mobile phone users that their privacy will not be breached, Google assures that ID tracking is done anonymously and that it is virtually impossible for them to collect personal information throughout the process. Privacy is protected by linking the static device identifier with an anonymous ID which is specifically stated in Google’s ads preferences section. At the same time, individuals who are still uncomfortable with the process despite the safeguards can opt out of the service by changing the settings on the Google search app and “Android Market” settings for iOS and Android devices respectively.

The best thing about this service which Google plans on unveiling in the very near future is that advertisers will be able to get more for their money. By tracking the behavior of users as well as their preferences, Google can choose to place appropriate and relevant in-app ads. This way, there will be a general improvement in conversions. At the same time, users will not have to contend with misplaced ads that seem a bit off at best and “spammy” at worst. The use of anonymous ID and ID-based targeting will be utilized only within applications while mobile web targeting will make use of cookies.
